hi new to this site, but hopping someone out there can give me a bit of advice, i have a 1960 Cadillac Coupe Deville, and the engine over heated, just like in the movies, "steam comming from under the hood thing". I'm not to sure if the engine is still ok but if it isn't and i need a rebuild or a exchange.
What would be the best engine for her on a exchange if i wasn't going to put the 390ci back in, can anyone out there help a "Lady in Destress":confused::confused::confused::confused:

Welcome.I think there is no need for replacing the whole motor because of overheating. But i am sure that your cylinderhead gaskets are blown now, just change them.

To be honest, there is no better engine to put in that car. Maybe a 500 Cadillac, but anything short of that or a 390 would be sacrilege. Other cars may be suited for the cookie cutter 350, but for something like that in a Cadillac would be a disgusting sin.

The 390 is a robust engine and will take a lot of beating, and offers a good chunk of performance. Try flushing the cooling system, filling up to the proper level and cycling it a few times. Replace the thermostat and hoses if they need it. Check your oil for a milky substance to make sure no coolant made it into the oiling part of the engine, that's bad juju.

If the oil looks fine, and after flushing the coolant system, checking/replacing thermostat and other fluids, yadda, report back.

Welcome to the forum. And remember, the more details and feedback you can provide, the more we can help you. And please do post back if you get it fixed and why, not just disappear. It'll help other users like you in the future discern their problem if they search for it.
