Got three of these griping plyers at HF $4.50 each extened them 6 inches using 3/16 x 3/4 stock. Works great make them as long as you want..Better then paying $25. each...Dan
You know, that's a damn good idea. I had a couple of smaller Chinese clamps, without the swivel pads on each end, and they wouldn't hold well. Not sure what the problem was, but they would unclamp after a while... they never really "clicked" into the locked position, they sort of mushed into lock, and would then come undone. I don't know if the new HF ones would be any different... but they'd definitely have more bite with that swivel pad, and extending them like that is perfect. I'll be getting a few and doing exactly what you've done. Thanks! -Brad
I did the same thing with mine only I made 'em 16 inches long...made them for some special job I was doing....I think it was welding 2, 61 chevy pickup fenders together to make 1 good one
Not a bad Idea and they are cheap enough that you don't mind cutting them up to make special tools out of them. I've got some cheap long reach ones that are ok for holding tin together to weld it but not much good if you really have to clamp down on anything.
I can't get the harbor freight clamps to stay straight. The clamp wants to roll and and the tips try to p*** each other.
Good idea. I need some extended the other direction, wider not longer. I agree on the ones without the swivel pads not clamping. They basically **** IMO.
I've got one set of those CHinese clamps, and they don't stay clamped. Nothing worse than tools that dont' work!
I bought some long ones at Tractor Supply, they were branded "Larin" and have swivel pads so they work better than the China Fright ones.
You would be better off spending your time making up this tool that will work better than any H-F tool. Use wheel nuts that have a conacil end. Stronger and never let you down when you are just about to weld.
We have a bunch of Vice Grip brand and also HF (Pittsburgh) brand clamps and there is a difference in the quality and the way the screw goes in and out. But the HF's are good for clamping in areas where they are going to get overheated or otherwise damaged in the welding process. Don
Extend it with 2 pieces of Square Tubing. Slot the ends with a cut-off wheel ,slip the clamps in and weld Works great. To all you haters of cheap tools [including me] Cheap tools have allowed me to customise them for 1-off situations which sometimes work better than expensive brand name tools
i can kick myself for not buying some of the nicer extended ones at a auction several years back. one thing about it you don't have much to lose choppin on those cheap ones. hey, if it works, laugh all the way to the bank. if they bite the dust the first time, get the good ones.
I did a similar thing but used 2 pieces of 1/8" strap, it made them a little more twist resistant. I also made up some with a big "U" shape on the top are to go around the rockers to weld in floor pans - don't have a picture of those because I lent them to a friend to do his floors. You can also make crossed arms and have a spreader - not my picture but a good idea.
Conical. The unbounded surface formed by the union of all the straight lines that p*** through a fixed point. 2 letters swapped. Not exactly a huge deal. Spelling is not a prerequisite to participating on the HAMB. I would rather have someone saying something positive and misspelling, than someone who spells correctly yet never contributes anything other than criticism.
Quote;I like this idea but try again with this word, please---conacil? what are these?" It's kind of like a cone, but something more like a fingernail or something like that, or something else. Each person should choose their own nuts, preferably some that are not in use for something else. And defiantly not a pair that are being busted by someone! By the way, one end of the pivot should be welded to keep the "fingers" aligned.

Hmmmmmm, cheap **** tools that you know are going to break vs expensive quality tools. Guess which one is always going to get bought? Cheap **** - it's taking over the world - no one wants it so why does everyone buy it? Because it's cheap!!! Cheap will always win. Ho hum.
If I'm making something that I'm just going to use once, why would I want to cut up an expensive set of Vise Grips?
