On my 62 ford 390 running a holley 1850 600 cfmcarb with new fuel pump ive gotten stuck on the road the last two times ive taken her out.I bought a new fuel filter(clear plastic) so i could see if im picking up any dirt.It idles fine and engine was rebuilt 2 yrs ago.Im thinking maybe i should change tank and sending unit.I blew out lines and vent line. When idling there is very little fuel in the filter. When i took it out last i ran fine for about 3 miles then died.I cranked and it would idle but when i gave it gas to take off it died.Any ideas?THanks
Any car that old can have **** in the tank. I have a 64 that I had to have a radiator shop clean out and they had to do it twice to get the crud out of it. I would drop the tank and see if I could clean it out to start with.
Read this thread, Kirk had the same problems. It covered everything that could go wrong. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=734249
The sender sock could be clogged or deteriorated. Also, the lines could be clear but perforated from rust. This would cause the pump to be ****ing air as well as fuel. Also check your cap, it should be a vented cap. In fact, try driving the car with the cap off and see what happens.
One other thing you might check is the accelerator pump in the carb. Unless you have an updated pump that will withstand the new fuels we are forced to use, it can turn to mush in as little as 24 hours. The car will start and idle, but as soon as you start to accelerate the engine will die. Also don't worry too much about not seeing very much fuel in the filter... they are very decieving.
Fuel pickup in the tank could be clogging with crud. I would rig up a temp gas tank using a small 3 gallon boat tank and see if the problem goes away.
