I have a 1948 ford F-1 that someone wants to give to me. It has 8 lug wheels so I'm ***uming its a 1 ton? I know the hubs are obviously different but are the brakes/ backing plates/ spindles the same as a 1/2 ton? also can I use the steering column and shock mounts will they be the same as a 1/2 ton? thanks
I'm not sure which years (I guess that;s why there is a search ****on), but the F-2's have the 12" self energizing backing plats which are dersirable to use with Buick drums.
The steering box is the same as F1. The backing plates are 12" like earlier fords. Im using the steering box and backing plates on my coupe.
As RMR&C stated, F-1 through F-3 have the same front axles and spindles. They also have the same steering box. The F-2 and F-3 have eight lug wheels, F-2 with 16" one piece wheels, F-3 with two piece 17" Window Maker wheels. The brakes are different for F-2 and F-3. Front shock mounts are the same. The rears are different. F-3 had an option for rear shock, F-2s came standard with rear shocks. F-1 had smaller diameter rear axles and if you want to install a Ford 9" you would have to fabricate new shock mounts or use shock mounts from a F-2, the F-2s' rear axle is about the same diameter as the 9". You would need a 9" from a pre-73 F-100.
