    When were halibrand smoothies first used?

    The First wheels Ted made was the " Smoothie " style... 1946/ 47 .. Used on most Indy cars since 1950 and waay up in the mid fifties
    ( Magnesium Alloy Castings )

    They were originally built for Midget circle track cars because the wheels they were running at the time were two model T brake drums welded together. They were heavy and fragged at high speeds, going into crowds and injuring fans and drivers. Ted decided he needed to come up with something safer; this is where his experience with magnesium alloy castings at Douglas Aircraft came into play. He produced his first set in 1946 and word spread fast. They first went to indy in the early 1950s where they made their mark.
