My neighbor gave me the 4 speed out of his Chevy truck, it was a 45-46. It looks to me to be an SM420 but it has a little lever and rod attached to the shifter, I'm ***uming to use reverse. Just want to know what it is for sure so I can figure out what I want to do with it. Anyone know for sure?

I'm not sure what you have as far as the model exactly , but it sounds just like the trans in an old '34 Chevy truck that I had. I'm sure someone will be along with info shortly...probably Squirrel.

Can't tell you anything about the gearbox itself but that little lever is a "Reverse Lockout" release. The trans is most likely something totally unsuited for driving on the street-super low 1st gear and possibly non-synchro in the bargain.

From my understanding, the SM420 came out in 1947. Do you have a picture? Are there any P.T.O. mounts?
