How fast is safe? I have went 115 in the quarter on Towel City Tires recap 10.00X15., but plan on going quite a bit faster.

What have you guys really ran for an E.T. and trap speed?

    Nobody drag races with retreads.

  3. I've got 2 questions for you.

How much money do you have in your car?

And you want to run "re-****s"???

There are others like "do you care about your safety" and "do you care about the safety of other drivers" but I figure I'd leave it at that.

Towel City has been doing this forever. Why not call them up and ask them?

Their tires ain't for posers, racers buy them.

If you want to go fast- you will loose the pie crusts & run a real slick. You know- the ones w/ multiple compounds, ones that run liners & tubes, ones that wrinkle & give a big contact patch on launch.

wow, thanks for answering my qusestion. First off wrinkle walls are not traditional.
Secondly on a properly prepared track they launch just fine, and you are not losing valuble 60' time wrinkling your sidewall.

I have had no trouble at all with my tires, and I am sure that there has to be someone else running retread cheaters. I just want modern first hand accounts of these new retreads going fast or comming appart at speed. not hearsay or a my buddy account.

Is this a joke? Retreads? You run on retreads, do you think you are the only guy on the track? You think maybe there is a guy in the other lane, how about some people standing along the guardrails?

  9. i went 169mph on a set of 10 inch radirs. i used tire softener on them first. just for the record 10 inch non pie crust slicks came out in 65 look at any super stock mag from the era. car crafts latest retr edition has a story on landys 65 awb car doing comparisons between goodyear regular slicks and m and h pie crust slicks. i run radir 12 inch 32 tall on my 31 chrysler and have had no problems at 140

Why don't you ask Don Garlitz how they did it back in the old days?

  11. I was going to go there. I'm glad you did.

I know I keep track of the cars I go up against and if I think the "other" guy isn't taking my safety as well as other racers into consideration I bring it up to the track officials. I will not line up against some yahoo that don't give a **** about safety.

I've done 124+ on both Hursts & Radirs. Quickest ET w/ cheaters was 11.40.

    Modern tires brought 10.90.

I have the old magazines and yes I know Goodyear has a smothe sidewall tire for 65 , but not to many were run in 65 mostly in 66 even the state of the art 66 flip top Mercury Comets ran were designed to run on a M&H piecrust slick.

I asked the question so I would know how fast was safe, not to get a bunch of retread haters telling me that I am an idiot. I will most likely run the Radirs, but if Arnie Beswick can run in the 8's on Bruces recaps then I would think low tens would be perfectly safe.

Why not check with the manufacturer and see what they recomend ! Last week I had a question about my Goodyear's leaking air through the sidewall . Thinking that there might be a problem with the sidewall of the tire I called them and there answer was to coat the inside of the tire with dishwashing liquid . No more leaks .

no sanctiong body allows recap slicks ---is that the same as a retread ?---where do you think all those gators come from on the interstate ?

  17. Well this puts an end to this thread!

Besides, who said Arnie B. runs them? He's much smarter than that.

  18. yea but I always race outlaw. :D

I want to interject something here while I have run recaps on cars in the past I have never run one on a motor cycle. Maybe that puts it in perspective a little bit.

  19. So you're an Outlaw? :D

And as long as you are on the subject.... They made re-**** bike tires???

Marsh Racing Tires used to do all kinds of recaps..At least 15" wide for Modifieds [circle track] and various sizes for Road Course and some Drag slicks..They held up very well..With todays technology a recap should be even better...

  24. radirs are not recaps. and they work just fine. they have a firm side wall so i dont run tubes. also get them very hot.

FYI Most of the gators (tire treads) you see on the interstate have been proven to be from under inflated virgin tires not retreads.

i want some towel city retreads. i think they look killer!

  29. my slick retreads are a year old,4000 miles and cracking on the sidewalls near the pie crust.I spent a day racing at the track when i noticed the entire seam around both tires was coming apart.I had to drive the car home very slowly, they bounced around the whole way home.I wont say what brand ,but there is a reason recaps disappeared on p***enger cars.Growing up i remember many times seeing them tear up cars.retreads are a gamble.Dont feel like posting pics right now,but its true.

Since the other thread was closed and its not really worth starting a new one over:

Has anyone tried to buy a set of Radir slicks as of late?

I called and they got my info back in the end of July for the 10.0-15" tires and they said at the time around Labor Day is when they would get them in. Called the week after labor day said they didn't know when they were going to ship. Called the past two days and NO ONE answers the phone.

I don't really want to run retreads for what I want to do (low 7s 1/4) but its really frustrating to wait almost 3 months for tires with zero idea when they will be ready.
