I think they are pretty much universal. Go to your favorite parts store(a real one with actual catalogs on the counter ) and check both ends of a cable for your 56 and a cable for an application with a C6.

If they're the same, just get one for a 56 mercury.

If they're not the same, that's where the catalogs come in handy, you'll be looking for the correct length, with the proper specs at either end.

If I walk into my local store holding two simular parts, the guys just turn the catalog rack around for me.....they're used to it now.

Give these guys a call, I called and am having them make me a 49 Merc speedometer to Chevy 350 turbo tranny cable. The guy knew exactly what I needed, and really nice.

probably a 56 merc speedo cable. With the correct gear for the C6 put onto the end of it.

At least some speedo shops can assemble a cable using stake-on cable ends and crimp-on cable housing ends.

    someones gotta have a solution...

  9. Stock cable will work fine. If you don't have it, just but one from a 60s GM. Full size like Impala then it will be long enough. I say GM because they are readily available and cheap.

You've just had several solutions suggested. Have you followed up on any of them?

The stock cable wont work, the speedometer driven gear and fitting is not the same as the C6. The C6 takes a clip on gear the Merc uses a gear with a stem, you will have to get one from a mid 60's Ford like a 65 to 68 Mustang or truck. If you want one made we can do it just give me a length.
