I pulled my engine out of 69 F100 to replace a few things, and when i dropped the pan I found a bunch of debri in the bottom. This FE has close to 400k on it so im not sure how long this **** has been in there.. There are also some dark brown plastic pieces, not sure if that was a different issue that came apart too or part of the metal debri..The metal seems to be a few thousands thick or so.. The engine wasn't making any noise, it's had a slight lifter tap for probably 200k but that's it. I pulled the engine to replace the freeze plugs so i figured i would clean the grease off and replace a few gaskets and seals..any ideas on what it might of been?? I'm drawing a blank
Guessing the plastic may be nylon timing gear teeth. I know 60's era Lincoln's were famous for nylon timing gears falling apart and clogging oil pump screen causing oil starvation. I've seen many pictures where the nylon was completely gone and chain was running on the metal sprocket under the nylon but owners still report engine ran fine even then.
i agree , me thinks timing gear set got replaced and they never cleaned out the pan , just pulled the timing cover and gooped it back on from above with it engine in car
My pop did replace the timing chain once when i was right out of high school. I was using the truck to deliver pizzas and it just didnt want to start the next day, hell that was almost 20yrs ago! I dont remember if it had a platic gear or not. Everything looks fine in the bottom end, I don't remember any other issues ever with it.
