I was wondering who makes...or what applications I should look for to find a set of skinny steel wheels in the standard Ford/Mopar/AMC 5 x 4.5" bolt pattern? I think 1940-48 Ford wheels fit the bill, at something like 15 x 4" or 15 x 5", but is there anything newer or avaialble in the aftermarket? I'd dig running 16 or 17 inch steelies, too, but I want 'em narrow...no more than five inches wide, and the same front and rear. For a modified roadster project, selling off the Chevys to start on one done the way I want it, and leaving no room for compromises this time around...no more just breathing new life into old rusty relics, this one is a ground-up deal. Spoked wheels would really kick ***...but they'd have to be straight and true, and I'm not positive that they'd have just the right 'look' for this effort. But I'm open to ideas if you know of a source for 'em.
Hack The 40's Fords are 5 x 5 1/2 bolt patern. Look to the 50 51 52 Fords They are 15' and 4 x 4 1/2 bolt patern. I may have a set of four for you!
in 1949 and 1950 ford produced a optional 16" steely that is 16x4.5 inches. these were wheels made for people that didnt want to switch to the 15" that came out. and were a steel wheel. I have 1 pair of them on my T. from what i hear they are ultra rare? i guess i have the only pair i have ever seen, but i also havent really looked for them much. they have the small ford bolt pattern on them cause i run them on my 8" rear. ~aaron
5 x 4 1/2" Ford/Mopar late patterns: If you want a 14" steely up front that's fairly narrow, aobut 4 1/2 - 5" the early Mustangs had them. Up to about 66-67 if I remember right. If you're looking for a wider wheel to run your "big" slick on, the four seater T-Birds had a 15 x 6" wide wheel. These from memory as well. I ran these wheels as a bolt-on to my 50 Ford coupe. And fwiw, I ran the 6 x 15" T-bird wheel with slicks on my 50 Plymouth 4 door. To do that, you had to hacksaw the Plymouth locating pin off. The chart below shows bolt pattern, but not width or diameter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #studs/BC STUD SIZE COMMON APPLICATION 5 x 4.5" 1/2" Older Full size Ford & Chrysler Products 5 x 4.75" 7/16" Chevy Camero & Most Older Full Size Chevrolet 5 x 5" 5/8" Grand National & Most Older Full-Size GM Cars 5 x 5.5" 1/2" 1/2 Ton Ford Pickups, Most Jeeps, & International Scouts 6 x 5.5" 7/16" Older Model Chevy & GM Pickups, Some Late Blazer & Datsun 8 x 6.5" 1/2" All 8 Hole 3/4 Ton Trucks 5 x 7.75" 5/8" Old Wide 5 Hole Volkswagen 5 x 10.25" 5/8" Modified 37 Ford, Skeleton or Wide 5 Pattern 6 x 5" 6-Pin Sprint Car 5/8 Drive Pin 6 x 5" 6-Pin Midget 1/2" Drive Pin 4 x 98mm Fiat 4 x 100mm Chevy Chevette, Plymouth K-Car, Isuzu, & Renault 5 x 100mm All GM A, J, & X Body Front Wheel Drive some Mopar 4 x 4" Vega & GM '80 & Older Skyhawk, Starfire, Astro & Sunbird 5 x 4" Plymouth Duster, Scamp, Valiant, Dodge, "A" Body Mopar 4 x 4.25" Pinto, T-Birds, Other Ford Small Cars, Some Porsche 4 x 110mm Some Renault & Mazdas 4 x 4.5" Older Mustangs & Capri 6 Cyl, Some Datsun, MG, Mazda & Toyota 4 x 120mm Some Mazda & Honda 4 x 130mm Volkswagen & Some Porsche 4 x 140mm Subaru 5 x 6.5" Land Rover 5 Bolt Wheels 5 on 100mm (3.937") Buick - Century, Skylark, Skyhawk FWD '79-'87 - LeSabre, Riviera, Somerset '85-'88 Chevrolet - Beretta, Citation, Cavalier, Celebrity, Corsica '80-'89 Chrysler - Laser, Lebaron '85-'87 Dodge - Daytona, Aries, Charger, Lancer, Caravan '85-'89 Oldsmobile - Calais, Ciera, FWD '82-'87 - Firenza, Omega FWD '79-'86 Plymouth - Sundance '87-'89 Pontiac - 6000, Grand Am, J2000, Sunbird, etc. FWD '82-'87 - Fiero '82-'88 5 on 4 (101.6 mm) '64-'69 Mopar "A" 13" '65-'76 Mopar "A" 14" Dodge - Aspen, Dart, Demon, ******* (w/o discs) '63-'72Plymouth - Barracuda, Duster, Valiant (w/o discs) '61-'74 5 on 4-1/4 (108 mm) Volvo 140, 164 15" Volvo - all to '89 Ford - T-Bird '89 5 on 112mm (4.409") Audi - 5000 Turbo, Quattro '86-'87 Mazda - RX7 GSL '86-'87 Mercedes - all '77-'89 VW - Transporter, Vanagon '71-'89 5 on 4-1/2 (114.3 mm) AMC Gremlin, Hornet, Pacer, Javelin, Matator, AMX AMC - most models (exc. Hey Greg, try checking on save-a-spare's. Pete has them on his bucket, and they look real cool. His are 16's and 18's, but I know that there has to be 15 inchers out there. BTW- they are real cheap at the bone yards.
Are the spare tire rims of the same quality standard (made for everyday driving) as a standard rim. i know the tires are not. I had thought about finding a set for narrows for my project but was worried about them.
Flatheadpete has run them on his bucket for a few years now, without a problem. The rim looks to be just as strong as any other steel wheel. Here is Pete's car with 16" S-10 spare rims on the front, and 18" astro van spares on the rear. He made these work with adaptors.
A few additions for your list for 5x5" - Chevy/GMC 1/2 ton pickups and Suburbans GM full size RWD wagons through 89 or 90 (includes Pontiac, Buick, Olds and I believe even the Chevy models). And on Imperial, they tell me the 5x5" pattern goes back further, although the spare I borrowed from a '60 was the regular smaller pattern. I have a nice looking skinny space saver rim here with a Chevy pattern on it, I don't see why it wouldn't hold up to normal driving. If anything those wheels need to be made a little stronger, I'd think. Not to hijack, but my wheel issue is sorting out what rim will be wide enough to still fit on my '50 Chevy and look right, but wide enough so I can run more shallow-dished front hubcaps and have them clear the actual hub -
Most any Studebaker car wheel you find will be 15x4.5, with a 5-4.5 bolt pattern. Pre-box Volvos had the same bolt pattern, and were 15x4. Wheels made after '64 or so have cooling slots like VW wheels or Diplomat cop car wheels. Before that they are plain steelies. I don't know the diameter of the center hole, it may be smaller.
Temp tire rims are PLENTY strong for anything you wanna use them for...We have used a bunch of Honda 16x4 temp rims with Ford centers welded into the outer rim.
Thanks for info. I think those 16" steelies can´t be too rare, because even I have four of them here in Finland. Anyway they are really nice looking, I´m planning to use them in my current A pick up project.
