I have a 9" from a '68 Galaxie that is going in a '40 Ford 1/2 ton. Before I pulled it apart it did not appear to be leaking from axle or differential seals. Everything felt nice and tight. The bearings appear nice and tight, axles look straight, splines are in good shape, gears look good, pinion is firm. So my question is should i be looking for anything else? At this point can I weld my 4 link in, replace the axle seals and put it back together? Am I missing anything? Any advice is appreciated. I want to be safe. Thank you.

The beauty of the 9" is that they are not hard to service should something eventually wear out.I would put the car together and drive it.

When I look for problems on either differentials or transmissions, the first thing I look for is leaking seals. Then I check for play in shafts.I always check the condition of the oil.

isnt that 68 way too wide for a 40?

  4. I would like to get a look at the wear pattern on the gears and the gears themselves, maybe a pick or two.

I have also been known to remove the carrier and take a real look at the rollers and races for pitting. But if you don't know how to set up a rear I would not siggest that you do that because you will have to set you gear lash again if you do.

Like as has been said just run it and see how it acts. If it is wonky then drop the chuck and go though it.
