Is there a rule of thumb to adding color to primer? I have heard one quart paint to one gallon of primer. Okay, the paint is it enamel single stage automotive paint or the base color of a two stage paint (BC/CC)? I would think either would work. Red or blue enamel (?) mixed with white or gray primer. The car is in K2 urethane primer with a top coat of urethane dark gray sealer I winterized it two years ago with that. (Tired of the color) Till all the body work & floor pans are done it will be in primer for a while. I am looking for a splash of color to the primer. It's No show car just a beater.
Read the product information sheet for the primer you are using. They are all different, and very specific as to what and how much.
Heres what I know, Im not a painter tho. K98 = expensive, seems there are different opipions. I just bought from the local paint wholesaler a tinted primer sealer for fleet colors. There was a wide range of colors avaiable. However they are quick to tell you they may not last over a year and can ckalk on you. Im going to use the sealer for a shakedown and then go to paint. I know its not a direct answer to your question, I'd be curious also.
In my search of the web I saw this: you will need to pick up a quart of paint and dump it all into the gallon of gray primer. Once the paint and primer are mixed, you will add the reducer and activator per the instructions on the can. Do it this way so if one needs to replicate the color again it will be easy to remember. Just make sure you use urethane paint and urethane primer. Read more: http://www.sporttruck.com/techarticles/0803st_how_to_tint_primer/#ixzz28uAkanaq I don't own, promote, or encourage mini-trucks. (I have a '48 F-1 V-8 with 4 speed and a F-350 7.2L with 6 speed.)
My buddy mixed me up a batch of tinted primer just about every July for a number of years so I could freshen up the 48 before Vintiques NW nats in Yakima. He took a gallon of light gray primer and started putting tint in it until it came out the way he thought it should. I usually shot it in my other buddy's driveway on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning. If you got close to the truck when it was sitting at registration in the photo above you could smell the three hour old primer pretty easily.
Check out House of Kolor website. KD3000 can be used as a primer or a sealer depending on the formula used. They even have a color chart on the website. Quality products. Bill
