Ditch My Oil Filter for Fentons?

I have a 52 Chevy with a 216 in it. It has an aftermarket Innerline Oil Filter on it. I've been wanting to intall a pair of split Fentons but could never see how they would fit until I found a pic of another Chevy with side motor mounts.

I'd may have to ditch my oil filter. As I understand it the filters only filter a portion of the oil. Anybody know how much?

Do you think the Fentons would clear? Would you ditch the filter if that's what it took to be able to fit up a pair of Fentons?

    Some pics:

I have an old '47 216 that I run daily and it never has had an oil filter on it. Now over 100,000 miles on it too. I do change my oil every 90 days and if I had a filter it may require changing an a closer interval. Oil filters were an option in those days.

most would not agree with me but I have owned two chevy's that did not have an oil filter, one a 235 and one a 265. I changed the oil regular and never had a problem with either engine, the 235 was on the hi-way a lot.......several trips from Dallas to Okc and Dallas to Kansas, city...

    just my 2 cents

The Innerline "Filtor" is a rare and very cool piece. It will NOT work with Fentons, but will work with aftermarket tube headers.

Check my build threads (#'s I & II) at the 216 Group in my signature.

Ditto, #3 post,...MY 57 Bel Air 6 cyl had no oil filter, use good oil, and change regularly. You can also mount the filter remotely, if you need space around the Fentons. I believe there's several kits on the market, to do that.

If you still want to run an oil filter, get this style which would still clamp to the intake. Here it is on my 235.

My byp*** filter was bolted to the original 216 intakes via a backing plate and some U-bolts.
I installed a Clifford research intake and Fenton headers. Ran to the local hardware store and picked up some longer U-bolts that would work and bolted it back on to the intakes.

The "Inner Line Filtor" does not use oil lines. It bolts directly to the case.

As near as I can tell, Inner Line was "all in" by about 1952.
Personally, I dig the rare old stuff, and wouldn't trade it for some aftermarket Fentons,
or one of the millions of remote filters, especially when tube headers will still provide split pipes. JM2C.

  9. It is basically a remote ooil filter why not extend the lines and put it somewhere else.

    OK never mind then. ;)

Mo, I'd like to keep the Inner Line, from what I've learned they're as about a rare as hen's teeth. Can you tell me where you got your tube headers? I'd like to keep my parking brake, does the rear header interfere with the parking brake? Do you have any pics of your set up installed in the car?

From the looks of your installation, it bolts directly to the diverter valve on the engine block and doesn't have external oil lines (but internal p***ageways).
Since it fills with the weight of a filter and a fluid quart of oil and "hangs" in a fixed position, it looks like a little Green Loc***e would not hurt on its ***embly bolts to the block?

Would it get in way of stock mounted generator ?"

Correct, CurbFeeler. Hence the name "Inner-Line".
Generator clearance is no problem. I bought mine used, with all original gaskets included. No sealant had been used.

As I said, this is a truly rare piece. The only printed do***entation I have found was in a 1949 Chevrolet service bulletin.

Hussey, It will be quite a while before this motor is installed. My headers were from The Hot Rod Company, but were also marketed elsewhere. I don't anticipate any clearance problems, however, as they seem to have been widely distributed.

Good on you, for keeping the "filtor" (note the spelling on the top :D).
By the way, Inner Line decals are available, for smooth top filters like yours

I've had a few engines without a filter over the years and the important thing to remember is to change the oil often,,BTW,,the Fentons look great! HRP

Thanks, Curbfeeler. Good to know you've got my back.
I didn't use the old gaskets, BTW. LOL.

Byp*** filters filter all the oil, just not all at once. They get the oil cleaner than a full time filter but it takes about 10 or 15 minutes to process all of it.

Here's what I did. It was a dealer installed remote oil filter with lines. I had to build a line from simple steel lines at Napa and move some stuff around, extend the bracket on one side of the canister.
See the filter and the stock coffin cube master next to the washer fluid

Now see the filter relocated , lost the cool oil bath air cleaner for a minute ( had to chop the base), but gained the power disc set up. Also had to relocate the washer squirter gl*** bottle.

Thanks all for the info. I'm going to place an order with Speeday tomorrow. Any input on the lenght of Smithy's I should get, 22, 26, or 30. I know it's a hard question to ask over the internet since how loud a car is all about perception. I'd like to have some good tone but don't want it so loud that I'd have to worry about my kid's hearing while riding in it.

Let us know how the header installation goes.

I can't advise on the mufflers. Mine has 14" Porters on 2" pipes and is LOUD!
Some guys are happy with straight pipes (especially smaller diameter), but I may someday tone this down (greybeard here.)

There are several YouTube videos of 235's with duals. Here is one to get you started. 20" gl*** packs on 1 1/2" pipe.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=annX8Snat1c&feature=related

Dyno tests by California Bill in early fifties showed the stock Chevy muffler to rob 22 HP at 4400 RPM on a modified motor. I expect any dual system to give a nice rumble.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the tube headers, four u-bends, and 30" Smithy's. I've spent my time so far making up a jig to cut the ubends. Picked up a Harbor Freight metal cutting band saw yesterday for $40.

I was hoping to get this all done by 26th which is the last cruise night of the year, but I've got other obligations right now. When I get it all done I'll post a vid of how it sounds.

The first pic looks similar to the set up in my '46 Chevy coupe. I'm running "William's" headers similar to Fentons. I rerouted the oil lines and used metal coils to insulate and keep them from contacting the exhaust system.

I'll have to get a decal. I hell bent on saving that filter now. I got my tube headers from Speedway, didn't work out. I think my Innerline is a little different than yours, the header outlet points right at the "arm" of the oil filter. I figured I could cut the outlet and move it up to sove this issue but the rear header has other issues. The bung for the heat riser is right behind the p-brake rod and I would need to rework my throttle linkage. I've decided I'm going to go with a split stock manifold. Looking at a couple options and have a thread going here:

Sorry about the headers. I know you're disappointed. Mine were not from Speedway, so maybe that is where the difference lies, rather than in the filter. My filter does have a lettered top, so there could be other differences.
It would be good to know.
I hope you'll post up some pics with the split pipes.

How about posting this on the 216 board in my signature? It's not super active, but I'd like those guys to have a shot at it. Nice piece!
