Need some ideas for a 60's style truck I'm building. I was thinking of some sort of fade or panel fade job. Had disscusions with plowboy on what makes a 60's style rod. He says it should have a white firewall. I agree somewhat but would like to go a little crazier than that and try to nail the 60's show rod look. Are scallops to much on a coupe or truck? How much flake is to much flake?

Are there any colors other than green and yellow in your part of Illinois? I guess you could fade green into yellow or yellow into green. hahaha Are you going to the drags with Aaron?

Yes I'll be there with bells on and nothing else. Forget the fades and 60's schemes You just gave me a vision! It's been staring me in the face all this time.

Man lest keep'em coming love to purple lincoln. Thinking of some form of green on the truck.

Nick my car told me it was lonely so I got her a stud. The trucks getting the nailhead, and hopefully a fade. You and the plow got the blue down I'd have to go darker, but it could look cool all sitting side by side. Your car is the **** like your blue better than Aarons girly shade. See ya at the drags!

Some more of that Purple Lincoln. Built for John D'Agostiona many years ago. I believe Bill Reasoner did most of the body work. Gene Winfield did the fabulous candy pearl fade and taillights.

ok and this one should not really be here since its a 1/25 scale model... but it has a fade paintjob and is a 60's style car. I built this one many years ago like a custom that Gene Winfield could have built in the 60's. '67 Plymouth GTX with '60 Merc grille, chopped top...

Rikster, we definitely have the same taste in customs. When I read the original question, before actually looking at the thread, I thought of the Golden Sunrise Chrysler and the Royal Empress Lincoln. Two of my all-time favorite cars. You posted some gems.

I love your GTX custom - I believe a long, blocky car can make a smooth custom, regardless of year. This model proves it!

What kind of truck is it? Step side or wide box?

If you look at the cars Rikster has posted, you'll notice that the fades are all horizontal and most run the length of the car. This will work on a truck with a wide box where the eye can run from front to back in one sweep.

If you have a step-side, there is a visual break right in the middle of the truck that makes a horizontal fade hard to do. You could do a vertical fade, front-back, though. Think of a faded flame-job without the flames, done in soft candy or pearl pastels.

Panel paint jobs will work on either model - their impact comes from breaking up the flow and causing the eye to check out the individual features: hood, side, fender, top, etc.

Scallops look good, but were p***e' by the sixties. Metalflake was in - by itself or combined with pearls and candies. Metalflake cars have plenty of pop, but can get over-done if you are not careful. If you do the whole truck in a single color flake, I'd use a micro-flake. The big flakes are cool, but can make the details of the vehicle disappear in the visual flash.

And if you want something really neat - really sixties - and not seen since then: Black Pearl. Watson did this on a Cadillac that was a knockout. Subtle, smooth and elegant. I'll see if I have a pic.

Look for a copies of Rod & Custom, June 1996 and October 1996. Thom Taylor did a great two-part article on Larry Watson with great photos.

Here are two from the October '96 issue:
The Black Pearl Caddy, and a shot of the 1966 Los Angeles Sports Arena Custom Car Show. Watson painted 54 cars and 25 motorcycles which appeared in that show!

A great source of inspiration for sixties-style customs is Popular Customs magazine. Published by Argus, in the sixties, it was chock-full of color photos.

Here is a cover shot of one issue with peachy El Camino fade job.

Damn thems some cool pics got me drooling all over myself. D'Agistino has some good taste for a general contractor. Who does his paint? I know some were done by Art Himsil, Gene, did Marcos Garcia do any of those? Thank rikster and rot n custom, we all got the same taste in cars even in the little one.

I guess its time to let the cat out of the bag. I'm building a plowboy tribute truck( he's the wind beneeth my wings). Mines a 35 chevy with a 60 Fairlane *** end, if I can get the guy to come of the 60. I want it to have a heavy 60's show rod feel i.e. roth and starbird. Thought about a fade because it would work well on the *** end but don't know how to extend that look onto the cab and grill? Got a real good idea out of the big book of barris page 102 the car is billed as the Andy K***a 32 coupe. It has a purple fade and a asemetrical grill treatment ( if I knew how to post pics I would, sorry).

Anyways thanks for the help any ideas are welcome. I guess I might need a concept drawing.

Frizby's truck will be much cooler than mine.

I still think Green and pearl white would be awesome. Puke Lime Green at that.

I think once the "donor" is acquired it will "tell" us what color it needs to be.

  25. For my money, you can't beat an Art Himsl psychedelic paint job, like this one on Miles Foster's T ...

Popular Customs went out of business around 1967. Keep your eyes open at the swapmeets, the HAMB swap forum, and eBay.

My copies are not for sale! :D
