This may make me the dumbest man alive but how in the hell do I start my car??? The ignition switch is just a on/off/lock switch, I tried the push on the gas pedal thing but there is nothing hooked to it electrical related. I traced the wire back from the starter and I think it went to a junction at the fusebox then into the steering column(it was hard to tell if this was the right wire cause I kinda lost it at the firewall but picked the yellow wire coming out of the same harness). Help!!!You have my permission to flame me......Mike
look on or near the carb for the throttle switch. if it is not there look for the wires to it. you can subs***ute a push ****on for the switch.
The throttle linkage may need to be adjusted. Turn the key to the on posotion and munually pull the throttle on th carb. My friend had the same problem with his Buick. I just adjusted the linkage and everything was fine.
And here's the dumbest answer -- my parents always bought Buicks back in the 1950s, and I remenber the starters being activated by pressing the accelerator to the floorboard. If there's nothing electrical down there now, could someone have moved it in the last fifty years?
I don't know Buicks...but if it aint got a crank hanging out of the grill there has got to be a switch somewhere...unless it has been removed.
it is either the switch on the p***enger side of the carb or it is a bad neutral saftey switch, before you start ripping stuff apart, try to hold the pedal down with the key in the on position and jiggle around the shift lever. if that doesnt work, i would get out the electrical tester thing and see where the fault in the system. then take go at the switch itself
Thanks guys, I got it. It was the throttle linkage not adjusted right. I turned the key on, grabbed the throttle shaft and held it open and it cranked. Thanks again......Mike Does anyone know if Carquest or Napa sells a fuel pump or rebuild kit for one. A part # would be great. Thanks again, again
If it was a manual trans like my '54 is, that's a fantastic way to roll over your own foot! And yes, you will feel stupid if you do that. Fuel pump? I converted mine to a cheap electric in-line because my pump went bad. They show up rebuilt on Ebay pretty regularly. Here's a really hot tip though--a fuel pump from a '57-'59 Chevy big truck will work. They ran 322 Nailheads in those trucks. Their fuel pumps are single action, so they don't have the big vacuum pump on the top half of the fuel pump. you'll need to convert to electric wipers, though. Otherwise, try CARS in New Jersey. Cantankerous coots who often aren't real pleasant to deal with, but they do have good parts. Also, get a factory shop manual! -Brad
Luckily mines an automatic and it was on jackstands. But that would be kinda funny to see. Thanks for the fuelpump info Brad
Theses are some Buick part supliers that you will find handy www.oldbuikparts.com which is the CARS Brad was refering too www.cl***icbuicks.com www.buickfarm.com you may need to google this one there is a bobs automobilia and Buick World they dont answer emails Good luck Buicks rule. Funny thing, I rebuilt a 1959 Buick from the bottom up, and I NEVER found the starter switch ... it just worked !
