The bolt pattern looks the same on a desoto intake so it could be that.....I have a desoto (291) in the garage and the outer bolt holes are 15 5/16" apart (center to center~about). Measure and see......dodges use a different bolt pattern so it's not a dodge.
i know on a desoto, the coolant exits through the intake. i'm not sure about chryslers, did they have a crossover in front of the heads? my guess would be desoto.
That will fit any of the early Chrysler hemi's. It will not fit anything else. It will not fit a Dodge or DeSoto. Great find!
That manifold is an early speed item and will fit any Chrysler hemi using pre-'55 heads. The earlier heads didn't have the water outlets in the front and water exited through the manifold similar to a SBC. In 55 and later Chrysler hemi heads the water exited through outlets in the front of the heads into a crossover manifold which held the thermostat. DeSoto's always had the water outlet in the manifold and to my knowledge all early Dodge hemis used a crossover manifold.
just curious, how can you tell by just looking at the picture? i do believe the ports look too large to be desoto, but the desoto pattern is very similiar and to make that distinction without measuring, i just want to know how you do it. it would come in handy at swap meets or ebay when i forget my tape measurer.
I based my call on port size. DeSoto hemi ports are smaller. The DeSoto and Chrysler bolt patterns are very similar and given just a picture the only true way to tell is to measure.
I identify them by the bolt pattern. If the valve cover is "UP" and the cam is "DOWN, it works like this. The Chryslers are: Down,Up,Up,Down,Down,Up,Up,Down The Dodges: Down,Down,Down,Up,Up,Down,Down,Down The DeSoto's: opposite the dodges
Great post! I've been looking for this info for a while. I keep getting Hemi intakes and I never know what the hell they fit. I've got an old Weiand inline 4x2 I've got to go ID now.
**** scoob, if you hafta keep getting early Hemi intakes, the least you can do is offer em to ME! No really, if you come across a 6X2, pref. a Weiand, or whatever, let me know. I got lots of plasma, and *****, to sell! Or stuff to trade (not the aforementioned). Jay
Actually, you could still use it on the post 55 heads (354 and 392s) by simply blocking off the front water outlet with the same plate that blocks off the rear outlets. Those logs were probably made by a company called "u-fab" or "you-fab-it". Neat little kits. They made all the pieces, you welded (fabbed) it together. Up side, they were cheap, down side, very rew were welded without warping, lol.
Yes, it looks to be Dodge. Remember though, Dodges and Desotos had "low deck" and "high deck" intakes, and they WON"T interchange. You can however run a 331 chrysler on a 392 motor and vice-versa PROVIDING, the heads match the block (331/354 on a 331 or 354 or a 392 on a 392) 392 heads were designed to compinsate for the 392 block height.
If you got that from Brandon, it my best guess that it's for the same 331 that he re-hauled down here.
This is not correct. I just checked in the garage where I have two Chrysler 331's (a '54 and '55), along with two DeSoto tall decks ('56 330 and a '57 345). The bolt pattern on both the Desoto and Chyrsler heads is the same, although they are different sizes. Down,Up,Up,Down,Down,Up,Up,Down.
that's what i thought, same pattern, only spaced out differently. so we're back to port size to determine when you don't have a tape measurer or gasket handy. or water crossovers
