Trying to remove a flywheel from a sbc. After removing the bolts, I cannot get the thing to budge. Tried a wheel puller to no avail. Any suggestions? Do not want to damage it.
Dang thing should just pop off. Nothing holding it on but the bolts. Maybe the alignment pin is doing something odd ? I'd smack one side with a rubber mallet.
stick?? use a crowbar to pry automatic use a torch to heat center last one i ruined getting it off, shit happens
like Gary said-smack it side to side with a rubber mallet--sometimes a little rust will form around the center by the crank causing resistance
Unfortunately I smacked it around with a rubber mallet prior to using the wheel puller. Was hoping there was a trick to it. Hit it with some lubricant, hopefully it will pop tomorrow.
Bigger rubber hammer and soak the center down with pb blaster. I've never had one that was that much trouble to get off though.
Ive had this happen a few times just take a j hook and stick the j hook in one of the holes. Then get about 30 feet of more chain then back your truck up till it gentley touches the motor. Make sure your locked in 4 low and then give her hell but dont let up untill you hear a slamm. Get out and look. Problem should be solved. If not try lightly tapping it with a rubber hammer like mentiond above. But you gotta make sure you dont hit it to hard. You dont want to bend it or even worse risk cracking it.
Warm it up with a torch - WARM ! Around the bolt circle . Beat on one for way too long with no results - couple seconds with a torch and it fell off. Or lock the wheel and turn the crank bolt
If it only budges a little bit, you'll have to wobble it until it comes off. Just like a hub-centric wheel, corrosion can form between the center bore of the `wheel and the crank / hub on which it's mounted. It just takes wobbling it off. Pry at 3:00, then 9:00. And back and forth. It'll come off. Just not as easily as you wanted.
the J-hook/chain/4x4 sounds real neat. But remember Murphy's law. If you can't remember it, there will be a hint coming through the back window of the pickup about a fifth of a second after you hear that flywheel pop off of the crank....
If you take all the lug nuts of your rim and the wheel dont come off what do you do???? You work at it and hit it with things with out destroying anything.
Ok ...I'll bite. Are we calling a flexplate a flywheel ? Cause I've had plenty of those stuck on the center. As said above, heat it in the center. You can even use a little propane torch. Probably better with that anyway cause if you get it red and start prying on it you might as well throw it in the scrap pile. Then just put a bar on both sides and work it back in forth till it pops. If it is a standard flywheel just pry the shit outta it on both sides the only thing you can mess up on it would be the ring gear if you pry against it.
What worked for me was pb blaster, tapping, patience, prying--in a rotating manner, not prying to pop it off necessarily, but prying to turn it on the hub. Patience, repeat etc. And eventually it should come off.
Let me guess, you keep a stick of dynamite handy. You know, just in case you get a stubborn radiator cap....
Not really gary. But one time I got mad at a floor jack and threw it threw the side window on my 52 plymouth. It busted the wnidow and fucked up the door pritty good.

Sorry guys, didn't check back on the thread after I got it off. Took the impact wrench to the wheel puller and it finally popped.
