Check the "Third Arm" that pivots on the X member, if there is any up-and-down play in it, the car will steer awful! Common problem on '49-'54 Chev's.
I shimmed the pitman arm to eliminate the up/down play and also adjusted the steering gear box and it made a world of difference. Follow the instructions in the manual to adjust the box. Cesar http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/shop/1949_53/09steering/9_02.HTM

Hi, my name is Jorge Frasser, from Venezuela. I own a 54 sedan Bel Air, and i´m having troubles with the power steering. What exactly means: "I shimmed the pitman arm to eliminate the up/down play and also adjusted the steering gear box and it made a world of difference." Thank you.
