Actually you found something to do with that Dodge. You shared pictures and your ideas while a bunch of car guys tell you everything you should do with it. Almost worth the cost just for laughs.
Hope someone who likes 4-doors takes it off your hands as is and enjoys it. I don't care for 4-doors either. But had a few. It's like an ugly fat woman---better than none!

Great looking mopar. If you don't like 4drs there are many that do. Here in simi there seems to be at least 5 4 dr(late 50's mopar) around all in great condition. So people are out there for it if you don't want it.

You should put that thing in my garage, add custom exhaust, lower it, wide whites, scotch bright the existing paint and re-clear it to preserve that patina. Then just cruise it... it's twice as cool as a 2 door, it's got 4! haha

I'm always back and forth with the more doors, some days I like them, other days I want nothing to do with them. Some look awseome, some look like shit. Just depends on what is gonna float your boat. I think it would make a descent mild custom, and an even better low rider with 13" Daytons or True Spokes, visor, skirts, lots of lace and panel paint job, some heavy flake and hit the boulevard.

Since it isn't a car you are really into, I would think it would be best to fix all the mechanicals to make it dependable, clean up the interior and body, throw some whitewall radials on it, and just drive it.

It is never going to be one of those cars a person should dump a bunch of money into, but in it's own way it is pretty neat. If you do the things I mentioned someone may see you out and about and just have to have it. Maybe even put a for sale sign in the window to see what nibbles you get. You might be surprised.

    I LOVE FOUR DOORS!!

Dude you know that! Youve posted on my build thread. You know Im down with classic dailys. ANY classic daily is better than driving a modern import. Even a modern domestic. HEY! Thats MY taste. Its not everyones!
I would drive a 4 door dodge daily ANY day.
Dude.... if you want a 2 door, go buy one. Dont convert a 4 door! Itll cost too much in time and parts and welding/sanding supplies. It would be easier to just clean it up and drive it or sell it.

And P_L_E_A_S_E dont part out a totally solid, straight, rust free, complete 4 door!

Someone weird and goofy like me who doesnt follow the classic crowd and prefers unpopular cars would buy this car and drive it all night long!!!

Heres my *DAILY* Rain or shine and LOVIN it!!

Some of my other KILLER 4 DOORS!!

  18. Shave back door handles, drop it, soup it, drive the stink outa it.

  19. The four door just makes for a great family cruzer. My buddy Doug calls them "no waiting", get right in. Please don't do the dumb taking the back door handles off! That is a real cool body style with awesome fins, grille, interior coolness, and a real classic. Keep it stock and enjoy it, my humble opinion. Uber cool car. ~sololobo~

  20. Contemplating the same questions right now with my more door Dodgem car.. SO here's what I'm doing now, I've taken the sawzall out and am cutting into my sedan to see if there is a good looking car inside somewhere...

Question for all: Why do poeple work on project cars they dont like in the first place? Was it given to you or you found it for free? Any "good deal" that you paid money for, but you dont like and never have liked, in hopes of making it into something you will hopefully some day like, is not a good deal to me. Id rather save my cash and wait until the car I am after finally pops up. Then youll enjoy it from the beginning and it grows with each thing you do to it.
And yes, I wait for 4 doors, pass on the 2 doors. Thats my thing. But Im always happy with what I buy. I think thats the key. Get what you want from the beginning. Dont spend time/money on a car you dont care for in hopes itll be the car you should of bought in the first place!

I just came across your thread today.

I have a '53 4 door Bel Air sedan. It was pretty solid until some jack ass slammed into the back and killed the right rear fender. Now, do I fix it up or not? No matter what I do, it's still going to be a 4 dr. It's not even a 4 dr. hard top. I love those... anyway.

Fix what you want, but keep it low buck. You have a rust free solid '50's ride in Oregon!
Take friends and family to swap meets/shows and put a for sale sign in it when you park. A reasonable price with "Drive it Home" and you'll probably find a buyer in no time.

Focus on those projects you've been keeping for how long?

And yes, "Why the hell can't I find a 2 dr. in that good of shape"! I say that one all the time. Life's to short. Focus on what you want. Beware of distractions.

Good luck with it and have fun doing what you want to do.

Boy that is some great trading material, You may not be in love with it but I'll bet someone out thre is.

  26. What does a '56 Dodge 4 door have to do with traditional hot rodding? Cruising around in an old stock for door may be fun to some but has nothing to do with hot rodding or showing your tastes, talents and appreciation for hot rods and customs. A little modification at least shows an attempt at and, unless you're into restored non-de-script 4 doors, makes ya different. Just sayin.;)

I agree that traditionally, or "back in the day" no one considered a 4 door a hot rod. Maybe very few hotrodded out the family car that was given to them as their first car to go to school in, but the vast majority were 2 doors.

The whole "four doors suck", "parts car only", "2 doors are true rods" conversations will never end as long as classic cars are still out there. Theres NO wrong or right answer, its just what you feel comfortable owning and driving. Also, if you concern yourself about what people are thinking and saying about your car, you may want to choose the "safe" choice and get a 2 door so that no one will break your balls about owning a shitty four door. Be safe and own a red/white 2 door 57 chevy, or a blue/white cobra, you know, something well known as koooool and accepted.....

Im talking about in the real world, not on a silly forum. I could care less either way, but it seems that people love to talk shit about 4 doors on a thread, but out of all the 4 doors Ive owned over the many years, and driven them daily, to shows, to drags, to cruise ins, to drive ins, to poker runs, you name it.... no ones said anything negitive about the doors. Quite the opposite. I get compliments on my cars.
Maybe theyre just being polite? Who knows....... WHO CARES??????

I dont claim to have a hotrod. My car is a mild custom daily. Yep, a 4 door mild custom.

I disagree with you when you say that cruising around in a four door has nothing to do with showing your tastes, talents or appreciation for hotrods or customs.

I dont care what Im "showing". Im not out to impress anyone or to make new friends because I have a 2 door. I enjoy working on and driving old cars, plain and simple. Obviously everyday people like old cars too, cause I get thumbs up, honks or waves EVERY day I drive my car to and from work. I guess they dont see that its a four door. Or..... it doesnt bother them as much as it bothers some on here.

Four door cars are cheaper, theres more available, old ladies tend to park their four door cars in the garage more = less rust, and... lets face it, no one ever hotrodded it! Theyre mostly found bone stock and complete with rad interiors. Id rather get a stocker and do what I want to it than have to repair all the hotrod hack jobs and shit welds done back in the day. After I realized years ago that 4 doors cost less and you get more, and its just the opposite for 2 doors, I became a 4 door lover.

People on here are conserned about poor resale value or that its not worth anything so it wont sell at all. Kind weird that Ive never had a problem selling, and for a profit, every time. I guess theres more people out there in the real world that just love old cars and the door count doesnt bother them as much as people on a forum. Plus, theres always someone like me that seeks out the four doors and doesnt look at the 2 doors.

This Dodge that started this thread is solid, complete, a runner, straight and looks rust free. You have to be a unique person to be a dodge lover, regardless of door count. However, this car is a great example of a survivor, a classic, a daily driver. It would be a shame to part it out for a 2 door and silly to convert it into a 2 door.

To see it my way a little easier, consider the following idea:
If I were to part out any 2 door car in the exact same shape and condition this Dodge is in so that I could fix up my 4 door, youd understand my problem with it.

Theres simply two different families in this classic car hobby of ours, and theyll probobly never agree on this issue.

  28. So... You think I shouldn't or can't modify my 4door? ...and if it only had 2 doors it would then be ok to hot rod?.. What an imagination...

Everyone has great points here. I have owned many cars over The years and i just aquired a 53 Chevy 4 door in The same shape as The dodge (see photo album). I dont know how it happened, but i cant say no to anything. 54-3 chevs are my favorite cars and always have been long before they started getting popular, but this one will probably go down The road too. Along with The dodge. Im just a 2 door Guy and as long as i can get them still ill always put them first. But dodge and Chev will go to good homes ill make sure. Most of my friends have 4 doors too. At least they are out Driving and working in them. Thats all that matters to me.
