Hot Rods 28-29 A Coupe What is the "Right" chop number?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Hackman, Oct 15, 2012.

  1. Hello HAMBers,
Well its finally time for my next project, a very clean 29 A coupe. It has been a long time comming and I am very excited to get moving.

So for my own sanity, because it is making me crazy, I was wondering if I could get an opinion from you guys on a chop number (inches) for these coupes.

Im going for a low, full fendered look with the "right" amount of chop.

So what do you guys think? Any pictures along with the removed number would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch,
    Hackster

  4. 117harv,
I did se that thread a while back. But 28-9 and 30-31 coupes have a dif roof height in stock form. Thus the 28-29 title. I have seen hundreds of pics of these cars from slight to heavy, but without a number its not a definate deal. Im a machinist, I guess I like my numbers. Thanks for the link.

About half of what the guys showed in posts 5,6,7 or 8 if you want a balance look to the car and are over 5'6" tall. That look is fine if you are going for the drylakes racer look but damned few guys would want to drive one chopped that much cross country for days on end doing the bucket list trip to one of the great rod trots.
It isn't all about "my top is chopped harder than yours" it's all about how much you can enjoy the car when it's done and if that extra inch, two or three out of the top will put into the category of hotrods that only get driven on short runs or usually get trailered to events because they aren't comfortable to drive any distance. I don't think my old bod would be able to get in and out of Dreddybear's car on it's own. It looks great but you have to be pretty young and flexible to get in and out and not need medical attention afterwards.

I'd go talk to guys with chopped A coupes at shows or runs and ask to sit in a few of them before getting out the saw. My 48 is chopped 4 inches and my buddy's is chopped 5 inches and the few times I drove or rode in his my neck hurt for a couple of days after and they had the same seats in them set up the same way. that extra inch makes all the difference in the world.

  12. Could be, I don't recall ever owning a weekend car. Well maybe my '46 I only drove it when my bike was down.

To be honest, when I'm driving my car I'm having way too much fun to notice if I'm comfortable or not.. I think it is...

How much room do you need to be comfortable and see out of the windshield? You can be uncomfortable and limit your visibility and still drive the car. But you have a choice now, so why make it hard on yourself? You'll have more fun and get more use out of the car if you build it to fit you. Good luck with your project.

  19. Dubcee,
I saw your coupe in Bville. Way cool man.

I hear what you guys are saying about comfort. But take a look at my T coupe. Its modified so that it "looks" right. The comfort level in that car is not the best. But like Dred said, I dont pay much attention when im slammin gears.

I guess the most agressive look is the most important thing. Its also going to be pretty quick, so again, the look has got to comply.

    Thanks guys,
    Hack

I put 300+ miles on in a day , at the swindlers poker run, and would have gone more if my house wasn't right in front of me and I had to piss! I run no channel, near a 5" chop, and TR6 buckets, slid way back. I love it and its comfortable, and I think it stands right for a full fendered girl. Hell, you saw it you have made your own opinion, I am just preaching to the congregation! Good luck on your build!...WC.......
