Several weeks ago there was an auction locally of great collection of old Fords. Here is a link with some pics and results. Unfortunately the 40 coupe was destroyed in a towing accident, sounds like the people were OK.

I was at the auction with my wife and was getting pissed, watching a dude (farmer not a car guy) set his ass on the front bumper of the '40 and supporting his weight on the top of the grille crushing the top bars (you can see the damage in the last pic, but it pales in comparison to the other damage). To top it off another old dude came up and set his ass on the passenger front fender…..That’s sad, almost sickening as it was a primo ‘40.

I thought the cars brought some strong prices. Here is a link.

Since the link is not working. What did the 40 Ford go for?

Thanks------We were just discussing prices of a 39 Ford coupe in another thread. Seems average. Sadly I'll bet they had no insurance and it looks bad.

Any idea how it happened? Just from the from the pictures it looks like they strapped it down using the bumpers. Not Google.

Looks like a bunch of quality cars at that auction. Makes me sick about the '40 ('40 Deluxe coupe only car left on my "bucket" list)

I'm curious about what happened as well. How does a car properly strapped to a trailer come off like that?

Good thing is, Dennis Carpenter makes lots of sheet metal for a '40, including tops.

The email link I received stated...

"The new owner from California missed the stop sign 1/2 mile east of the auction and got hit by a Buick SUV in the beaver tail of the trailer which knocked the car off the trailer and sent the truck down into the ditch where it hit a big post and then a grain auger. The truck, trailer and the '40 coupe were totaled. The poor guy looked to be about 65 years old but wasn't hurt. I don't know if he had the '40 insured yet. Very sad."

Yea they did. Might have caused the car to bounce or shift. Or another thing out of their control, like a stray cow or car could have caused it. Didn't see any wheel blocks or much of anything except those straps on the bumpers. Even I know better than that. Sure not worth 21,000 now.
There were some fine cars on that farm. Prices seemed fair for what they were.

If the car was strapped down properly the car would have been undamaged.

Yes, I am sure the guy feels like crap. I left out a photo that showed his license plate. The email stated they thought there was only one strap on each end of the trailer...

Hopefully sharing here will open peoples eyes to tow safely, with good equipment, used properly.

Man, a 1/2 mile from the auction! Poor guy-I bet he was in such a day dream zone from scoring the car he missed the stop sign. Pics don't look like the truck is totaled-and for what it's worth, that 40 is 'totaled', but I'd sure take a shot at saving it. Need a roof, door, fender, etc. It'll save. May show up soon in another auction as a fixer if the owner is washing his hands of the whole bad trip...

  19. 65 doesen'tseem that old. As others said it was not tied down properly. May not have made CA.tied down like that.

...or the car and the trailer it was strapped to would have rolled together. High center of gravity, ditch, sideways doesn't bode well for an "undamaged" outcome.

Hate to see a beautiful car busted up like that, hope for the guys sake he had called his insurance company before he loaded it on the trailer. Some policies can have a rider to cover what you're towing, so if this guy towed a lot maybe he's covered.

"Totaled" is in the eye of the beholder....yes, that 40 coupe is fucked up, but definately in the realm of fixable. I would take if off his hands for sure...

Hurts my heart to see it like that though...

Man........ the trailer got hit AND rolled! I doubt the number of straps would have made that much of a difference.

Truely sad, but at least the driver lived to tell the tale.

  23. damn, thats sickening, i've been told that it cost more to insure trailed old cars. more accidents with trailers than driving them. that just sucks.

Yeah , seems like the '40 has a lot of good sections ...maybe half . With some of the work I've seen on this forum , it's probably fixable .

  25. If the body isn't too far out of square, I don't see why it couldn't be fixed with a donor roof. Which, it's a lot easier to find a good roof, than a good floorpan, they usually rot from the bottom up.

  26. Heartbreaking. I feel for the guy, strapped correctly or not, you know he just feels like shit. Especially if he just ate that thing (no insurance).

Wow I am sick looking at that.

  28. That car didn't have a chance of being undamaged in that wreck, look at the last photo you can see the trailer was hit hard enough that it broke the receiver. He was hit a ton for sure. I believe that car is fixable in the right hands.

Just needs a new door from Carpenter. A good old school body man can fix that up. I work next door to a Russian body man who'd have that fixed in a couple of weeks. Certainly not totalled.

The real shame, is if I remember right, it is a low mileage original paint car. Now, If it's fixed, it will just be another restored 40 coupe.

Many of the other cars were low mileage originals. I think the light green shoebox had 61 ORIGINAL miles on it. At least that is what the auction bill claimed.
