I went to search, I'm not good with search. The starter relay on my 47 is a single post. Not sure if it is a 6V, or 12V. The car has been converted to 12V. I'm wanting to get at least one more relay, I think I broke the starter post on mine yesterday. Here's my question. Can I use the more modern, and much easier to get, two post Ford relay by just using the starter post? Isn't the other draw post for accessories? I'm learning this electrical thing "hands on" Thanks, Mike
Mike the second post on the Ford relay is start mode 12V hot to points for starting only, you don't have to use it if you don't want to. You can just use the start post for charging your starter. Does that make sense? But yes there is no reason that you cannot use a later starer solonoid if you have a 12v system. It will not work on 6 volts by the way.
Beaner! You always come through to save my bacon! Thanks! My logic said that the two post relay would work just fine. It seems to me the same relay, only with one more lead to excite another circuit. Living in a small town, I my be able to find the single post relay, but I know I can find the two post. I'm going to learn this automotive electricity thing if it's the last thing I do....
i normaly learn through my mistakes, there is so much good knoledge here, when you get to my age, 65 you realize that you have forgotten so much.
I probably have one of each somewhere in my stuff, if I find a single post 12V I'll just send it to you. Use the late model until you have the other then put the late model in the glove box for a spare.

Use the late model until you have the other then put the late model in the glove box for a spare." I picked up a single post at the O' Riley's this morning. Kid behind the counter said they keep them all the time. Fits all kinds of ag. applications. I'm going to get another one to keep in my stash in the trunk. ibuild, I'm 64, and I learn from the HAMB every time I come here. Thanks, guys...
Still have a start button? Single wire on it or two? If single you're probably looking at two different styles of relay. The original relay grounded that single post through the starter button where later model two post relays required 12 volts applied to the start post to operate. 12 volt versions of the original style are still available but you may have to find a parts store with catalogs to get one. Standard Ignition SS-587 is the 12 volt version of what was on your 47 originally (assuming we're talking about the Ford in your avatar).
Thanks riverview, It looks like the O'Riely's just up the street from me is a keeper! Not only do they keep the 12V single post relay in stock, they understood and had knowledge of what I was working on! Several hot rodders behind the counter, and the younger boys and girls have no qualms about asking questions of the older counter guys. My faith in finding a parts house I can live with has been restored. I'm thinking I should keep at least two of these relays on hand. At $20, it's cheap insurance.
