How do you get the oil pump out of a 8ba block. Took out the bolt and it's stuck good. Dose the cam have to be pulled out or not? I looked at a pic of a new one it looks like it should just slide out.
It will be cooked in there with carbon. Remove the bolt rotate the pump by the housing, soak with penetrating oil rotate some more more oil and it will eventually come out prying usually breaks the pump. All comes out without any other tricks 1 bolt is all that holds it in and all that carbon from shitty oil from days gone by. Nick here's a thread that might help you out, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=743826 Also I bought a book from speedway called Ford flathead V-8 builder's handbook by Frank Oddo, tons of info for us guys new to flatheads Tim Jones
They get stuck real bad sometimes. One in particular for me only came out after heating the back of the block with the torch. This was after prying - rotating - carb cleaner ………. It was the only way
Well I grew up in a machine shop And as of right now this is the second oldest flat head I've messed with. I also know broken antique engine parts can get expensive. My last flathead was a 21 stud that my helped dropped and broke the bellhousing off it. That was the end of that build.
Sometimes a pipe wrench at the base can get it moving then use lots of penetrating oil or diesel to soften the coked up oil - keep moving it and prying.
Get it warm / melt the sludge …. It will pull right out ( I wish I had first) I pulled - twisted on mine tell I broke it off wasting hours of time.
Turn motor pside down. Remove the single bolt holding the oil pump. Wrap some chain around the pump body. Hook your engine hoist sling to the chain around the pump. Operate the jack enough to lift the motor off the floor slightly. Use a pipe wrench or pip pliers to swivel the oil pump back and ...it should pull right out. Keep a piece of wood under the block for it to drop onto.
