I'd like to introduce myself as the new owner of a H.A.M.B. members 1955 Ford Country Sedan. My parents had the same car when I was a kid growing up in SoCal. I've done some work to it already, changing the oil and cartridge, changing the crankcase breather screen, installing a new speedo cable, replaced the seals on the power steering cylinder which had a pretty serious leak, and some minor electrical work. I plan to replace the headliner, re-upholster the seats, replace the windlace with stock materials from SMS and repaint the interior metal door moldings and pillars. It's a project I am looking forward to. I've got one question though that I'd like to post here, because I can't seem to post in the tech forum. Since I replaced the oil filter cartridge when I changed the oil, I added 6 quarts of oil but can't get any oil level reading on my existing dipstick. I ordered a new one from Mac's thinking mine was just a bit short (looks to have been broken and welded at one time) but that one barely shows the level as well. How long should the dipstick on a 272 V8 be. Both my old one and the one from Mac's measure 20 and 21 inches to the stop, respectively. Any help is surely appreciated. Bruce
Hi Bruce. I can't answer your question re: the dipstick. And i just joined the forum also. Just curious where in so cal? I was raised in the San Fernando Valley. So Cal was THE BEST place to grow up in the 50's and 60's. Good luck. Bill (Charly9g).
Hey Bill, I grew up in Westchester, a few blocks from Loyola University and LAX. So Cal was a great place to grow up! Yeah this dipstick thing has got me stumped. It should read past the "add" mark and well up to "full", but just appears as a slight drop on the very tip?? Anyone else? Bruce
Welcome from the IE. Been in So Cal my whole life too. Post some pics of your car when you get a chance. You should join the 52-59 Ford group here. They should be able to answer your question. I have a 302 in my 56 so I can't help. Here's a link to the group. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=332
