Well after a couple months of searching, we finally found my wife her dream car. A 1961 nash metro. We picked it up this morning from a fellow HAMBer here in town. I'm sensing a dual carb 4 cylinder in her future! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Scored a metro for the wife Well, you didn't post pictures of either the Metro or your wife but sounds like a good deal. And you wife didn't mind being traded ?
Seriously though, my wife would love one. Problem is, I sat in one once, and couldn't barely get out. Way too small for my fat ****!
Amen on the Happy Mama. I'd look pretty stupid standing up and someone picking that little bitty car off my ****!
My X wanted one BAD, to the point where I found myself being dragged to look at a few. We broke up....
If I am not mistaken the 4 cylinder is the same as an Austin Healy Sprite and MG Midget. I believe the 4 speed and engine will go in pretty easily and the 1275cc had lots of hop up potential! Could be a really neat little short!
Can't believe what those Metros go for on Barrett Jackson ....not quite as crazy as the restored VW Mini Bus though ( $200k ). T
I got one for myself a few years ago had a sit in it the other day ,,has the steering wheel got bigger or what ?,with my short legs if i push the seat back i wont reach the pedals!!
I have always thought that an MGB 5 main engine and 4 speed ****** (with the accessory bolt on OD if possible) would make a great combo in the Metro. The MGB engines were 1800 cc and the British built by far the heaviest 4 cylinder engines imaginable and I believe there is a lot of cylinder wall thickness for a real big overbore.
The original engines were either Austin A 40's or A 50's. The trans was a three speed with the shifter in the dash next to the steering column. I had a 55 ragtop in 1964/66. It was a safe car for a kid as it spent more time broke down then running.
I have a friend who has a Metro wagon, put it on a mini cooper ch***is, and it fit great. He drives it everywhere. Some east coasters may remember his previous ride, the 35 Ford "Headhunter"
Going from memory, the early production was a 1200 from an Austion A40. Somewhere in the mid-1950's, the engine size was change to the Austin A50 1500. Not a British expert, but there is probably a twin S.U. setup available for either. Jon.
Wow! Thanks for all the comments, guys! I will start a build thread on here, soon ( once I get to a computer that lets me post pics....unlike the iPhone app) I just need to get a shop manual to figure out how this thing works!!! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
No photos, but at least we know the lady isn't likely pushing 200+ lbs., nor will be if she wants to keep driving the car.
those things are pretty neat, but if you think they are small to drive, just try doing the interiors.i probobly done ten.lots of them got a houndstooth.have a blast!
Haha! Thanks. My plan is to rebuild the original engine and fabricate a dual carb setup for it...not trying to make it a street demon, but just give it a little kick. Plus, it'll look pretty darn awesome under the hood Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
You may not have to fabricate. If it is the later 1500, I think (not sure, check it out) that the dual S.U. set-up from and MGA will fit. Jon.
