I just got back from the Monterey Historics. I had a great time. I don't have pictures yet, but they will be posted soon. This year it was a tribute to Jim Hall and Chaparral. The best part of the trip by far was meeting Ernie Nagamatsu and his wife. They have to the nicest people in that group by far. They own "Ol' Yaller II" If you're not familiar with it, it's a specially built race car done by Max Bachowsky. It has a 401 nailhead and 4 webers. So we talk for a long while with the owners and they offer to let me and my brother take a seat in it. It's something I'll never forget. Sitting in the same car that was previously driven by Gurney and Shelby. Later they introduced me to the driver of Old Yaller for the historics...Bill Krause, a famous maserati birdcage driver and the first driver of a factory cobra. Later on sunday we were by the Chaparral tent when Jim Hall was called up for a parade lap. He's in the pits, cutting jokes while suiting up, and then about 5 feet from where I was standing, proceeds to do a burnout in a Chaparral 2E. Something else I won't forget. The racing was great, I have tons of ON-TOPIC car pictures to post when I get them all downloaded and sorted out. I also have some video that i'll post within the week.
It was a great weekend, looked like Old Yaller was having some trouble on the track though or just not running right... Man seeing the "sucker" car go round the track was too cool...Or seeing a Chapparel 1 spin in the corkscrew and just miss stacking into a tree, then get back on track and proceed to work back up through the pack balls out! Anyone else see the Camaro spin at turn 11 in Sundays last race then proceed to do a massive burn out up the start/finish straight? What a great weekend.......
I missed the camaro spin-out. I was at turn 3-4. I notice he lost the lead though. He came out of turn 3, spun the tires all the way to turn 4. Looks like it was fun. I was at the corkscrew for a bit, but the bridge they moved over there really ruins the view if you're not right up front. Tman.. I promise pics and video as soon as I get the stuff off the cameras
Jim Hall is a God!And you have to post pics of the 2E burn out! It's amazing how few people appreciate Can Am.There will never be anything like it again.
Thanks for the post, look forward to the photos. Someday I hope to get out to the Coast to see that event. There should be 10-12 cars from the event that will make the trip to Lime Rock Park here in Connecticut for the Labor Day Weekend event. Got to see the see the So-Cal Coupe there three years ago, great restoration with a nice owner.
I went to the Can-Am back in about '71 to Watkins Glen. Lother Moshenbacer{sp}, Jackie Oliver in the UOP Shadow, Bruce, and Denny. I still have part of my Shadow T-shirt somewhere. Read the book "Chevrolet Racing" by Karl Ludvigsen if you want the real story about the Chaparrals. It's been reprinted, but I have my first copy. Chevy loaned sealed engines and 2 speed trans, break the seal no more loans. Lexan bodies. Chevy designed and did all the aero tests on the*****er car, pics in the book of the Chevy test truck and the*****er car together on the test track. Those cars were monsters. Thanks for the memories, lets see the pics.
pictures, dammit I want pictures!!! while you were standing there smelling rubber, I hope you remembered to snap one off of Jim polluting that clean air down there. I am eternally jealous as he is one of the most gifted driver/ designer/ engineers of all time. I wish I was there. - Doug
