What is pretty cool, Steve, is that you have a group of guys close to you who do your chrome work, upholstery, lettering, and lots of other stuff. You have more hot rod type businesses in the UK than I have down here in Florida ! You must have cultivated those relationships over a lot of years. Don
I do most of the stuff myself Don but obviously chromework and t******* has to go out, I started building cars in 1969 so have encountered many good people over the years, virtually all of them have become goods friends. Obviously I use them all for customers work which has the by product of them giving me trade discounts etc etc, Which I appreciate. Yes i'm pretty lucky to have 2 of the best english trimmers local and mates, The chromer i have been going to for 42 years now, the present owner was the apprentice when i first went there, he now 63 !!! Sometimes i have to go outside the hobby to get certain things done but its very rare, I much prefer to keep it in the hotroding family so to speak. .
Weather has been pretty good so another productive day, mostly down to tidying up the little things now. I cleaned up the aluminium tunnel and glued down some carpet so i could fit my throttle pedal. I had already set it all up a few months ago on the bench to check it worked ok so it was a pretty straight forward job to fit, Its all fully adjustable and is a Speedway pedal and Speedway bell crank and the rest is home brewed, I was gonna make a bellcrank but the Speedway one is pretty good and works well and is infinitly adjustable plus it was only 15 bucks, not worth making one !!! I made an adjustable stop for the pedal reurn as well. Next I needed a cable, had a rummage through my box and found some Lokar parts, Fitted them together but because my firewall is 1" thick it didn't have enough thread, 5 minutes in the lathe sorted it out, I also turned the nut into a barrel nut which enabled it to thread together. I hate the braided look so will put some black heat shrink tube on it, .
Langy, Lovin' all these little finishing details you come up with. Definitely agree with you on the shrink tube over the throttle cable. I thinks it looks more old school and clean. Keep these last few updates a comin' ! Dave
Haha, when I saw the picture below I thought "Wow, Steve fabbed up a dual master cylinder setup by bolting two Chevy pickup master cylinders together...........how innovative !" Then I realized it was just the reflection in the mirror finished firewall ! Don
Hahaha, Its kinda weird working near the firewall Don, handy though as i can do my hair at the same time
Hi again Langy.Looking GOOD.Love your fabrication skills.Outstanding. And folks. If my tired old eyes do not deceive me,have you noticed that he even has his bench vise POLISHED and maybe even CHROMED?Now that`s attention to DETAIL. Good luck.Have fun.Be safe. Leo
Hi Im a new member today and fell upon your thread of my dream car. I have only made it to page 30 and am totally in awe. If, as you say, this car is not made with your usual attention to detail then I cannot imagine what your other cars look like. You give me new hope to build a car I thought was an impossible dream here in the states. Thanks for the amazing inspiration.
You've still got hair? 30 odd years of working in the car trade and as many failed/completed projects and I've lost most of mine....... Great work man. Keep posting!
Glad it's of interest to you rebel yank, as for the detailing no its not to my usual standard, I could of gone a lot further with paint, trim etc but I've never had a primered car so thought I would give it a try out. Thanks for the kind comments. . Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Hahaha still got mine luckily mate. What's your name ?, do I know you ? Do you use the nsra forum ? . Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
You probably know my old car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6TPGoo9dSs And we definitely have some mutual acquaintances!
Uh, Steve, someone just sent me a picture that they claim is you and Sue out on the town. But I don't think so, I see no cider bottle in this guy's hand. I didn't realize you Brits celebrated Halloween too. Don
Hahaha, yeah we was out attending a Halloween party, you better tell lil Don revenge is gonna be sweet !!!! . Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Well not too much to report due to small bits not here yet from the states, I'm taking the car to the Blackpool indoor show at the weekend and the storm in the states has caused havoc with my parts order as my shippers are in New York and the storm is about to hit Anyway i've made few changes and one of them was to get rid of the plexigl*** screen, the more i thought about the more it seemed to make sense to have a laminated gl*** screen as this will see a lot of street duty. I'm not sure of the name of the company who cut the 6.4mm screen for me otherwise i would give them a big plug as they made a superb job of it, I supplied them through my mate Gary a plywood template, the edges have been completely polished smooth, just a quality job. I bonded the gl*** in and because it was cold the adhesive took a while to cure so a couple of clamps were employed to hold it in place. I always intended to have a trim around the windscreen that looked like a stock type rubber so I cut a piece of 1/8" ply to shape and then encapsulated it in fibregl*** resin to seal it, then it was built to a rough shape with mat & resin, then sanded to shape and a couple of coats of satin black epoxy primer was applied, its still a little shinnier than the look of rubber but it will do for now, i'm gonna try matt black on it later. Here it is just laid in place but you get the idea. hopefully it won't take long to bond it on tomorrow as its not supposed to rain I also got my modified pitman arm back from the chromeshop so I have steering at last While I had the draglink off I changed the trackrod end for a stainless one. I will chrome the steering arm once I confirm everything ratiowise works ok. All my prop parts arrived ok so a mate picked me up a piece of CDS tube for me but when i started to put it together I noticed a small problem with the tube Need to get another bit I think .
You've been busy once again my friend. Getting sick of saying it, but it's outstanding work as usual!
Fibergl*** or not, thats a pretty awesome build you have there..... I "dabble" a bit in Willys myself.... NICE JOB!
That line lok looks familiar, we use them in our wreckers to hold the brakes while winching. Our 81 GMC/Century has that same vintage unit you do. The company still sells them though they are now aluminum and not so cool
