I've been looking for a 35 to 39/40 five window coupe for quite a while, sort of a bucket list deal. I'm involved in a couple of other projects currently but you always look right? Found this car on a local cl***ified site, looked at it for a few days telling myself "it's gone already", the asking price was quite a bit out of my range so I figured I was just torturing myself. I finally decided I would just call and put it to rest at any rate, I'm so glad I did. The gentleman selling the coupe turns out to be a very cool old school hot rodder who I have since started to become friends with even though we live 3 1/2 hours apart. He bought the coupe a little while back from the guy who discovered it, and just wasn't really all that interested in it. He has other projects and wanted it to go to someone who had p***ion for it. After talking with me for quite a while he decided I was that guy and proceeded to hook me up big time. We were actually able to strike a good deal for us both and ended up doing a straight across trade. I traded him a 39 Chevy pickup and a 67 Buick wildcat 430 motor ****** for the coupe. We were both very happy. Heres the story: Evidently this car was owned by a couple old farmers, possibly from new. Once the war came along, they did what so many people up here did with cars, they turned it into a pickup of sorts. As you can see from the pics they cut a section out under the deck lid and a little of the trunk floor. Boards were added and extended out the back a little. This would have allowed them to get additional gas ration stamps and gave them a little more usefullness for this car, at the time it was just a car, although not that old. Over the years I guess they used it and painted it by hand which preserved the metal nicely. It was driven into a building and shut off at least 35 years ago, possibly longer. I would say there is a good chance it still runs,it has that look. The wood has been preserved very nicely and over all there isnt any rust in the car other than surface where the paint is peeling. There is some damage to the right front fender and the obvious rear repair but other than that this coupe is more complete and solid than I ever thought I would find. Every one I ever found that hasnt been outrageous in price has been a basket case. My plans now are to try and not get distracted from my othe projects. I'm just tinkering with it and will see if I can get it running so at a minimum I can move it around on its own power. Thought you guys would enjoy anothe barn find story. 36 Chevy master deluxe
This is what I traded for the car, a friend said he has a wrecked coupe with the piece for the back I need, how cool is that? They didnt touch the decklid so that is good.
Looks like a great start to a project. The truck you gave up looked solid as well. Glad the coupe found someone who will take good care of it.
A coupe is just a coupe but a coupe-turned-pickup for the war is extremely cool! I would put a wood pickup bed back in it. Ever notice how restorers cars all look the same? yuck. I prefer something that stands out.
