55 Chevy Bel Air Bellhousing In A 59 Apache

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Scotch Buzzard King, Oct 22, 2012.

  1. Is anyone running a 1955-57 Chevy car bellhousing in their 1955-59 Chevy truck using the original mounting hardware? How did you compensate for the change from 2 bolts to 1 bolt on the transmission mounts?

  2. Come now. There must be some brave soul with an answer.

Cars 55-57 used a entirely different style of mount from the truck.

The angle on the mounting pad is different from truck to car.

Those old truck bells must be more available than a '55-57 Chevy bell.... you should be able to dig up one without a problem.

  6. All points are valid. The truck bellhousings are easier to find.

I have in my possession a 59 Apache, a 55-62 Chevy P***-Corv Wedge Engineering bellhousing I spent good money for some time ago, and the beginnings of a good 283. I want to use them all because I have them.

I'm starting to think that the best way to incorporate them is to forgo the factory mounts on the bell and use an aftermarket crossmember. Either way, I'm just too cheap to spend money buying components I already have.

Just redrill the p***enger car bell to a single mount hole. Forget about the little metal "***" the truck bellhousings have. The angles are different as already noted. Might try mounting the bellhousing in the truck before an engine/trans goes in just to see how it "fits". As often as I see trucks bellhousings advertised as fitting a "tri-five", this is the first time I've heard of anyone going the "other" way. It won't be perfect, but it should work. 8. I was thinking the same thing, Butch. It wouldn't take much for me to slightly modify a few items to get it to fit.

I think those truck bells are the same up to like 72 if I remember right...should be real easy to find.
