Just bought a 1951 chevy 3100 about a month ago it runs ok and as far as i know its pretty stock(from what people have told me but I dont have much previous car knowledge). I was wondering what type of changes would I need to make or can make to the truck to get it up to freeway speeds (65mph)....Thanks Guys
..and brakes! To go fast, one must be able to stop. If your Chevy's brakes are anything like my 1950 GMC's brakes, I wouldnt want to go freeway speeds
The Speedometer is broken on there but i think i got up to like 40-45 mph...i'll try and get some pictures up on here...I heard that changing the carburetor can also help...what do you guys think?
You might get more RPM out of a bigger carb, or two carbs. But it's probably the rear end gearing that's pretty low. Many cars and trucks from that era came with 4.10 or 4.56 gears. Without overdrive, you're not going to get what you're looking for. Overdrive and/or different gears is what will work best.
I agree with everyone that is pointing to the rear end. What about just changing the gears in the rear end? Do you know the rear end ratio in there now? Charlie Stephens
so a new rear end and new transmission? what kind will work? yeah haha it sure seems like we only do 10mph sometimes
basically nothing bolts in and if you have the truck style rearend gear changes are extremely limited put a 59 ford wagon rear into a 53 3600 i think it was
