Do old cars/trucks have souls?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by So-cal Tex, Oct 22, 2012.

  1. Here's another one about my grandparents 61 caddy that ”didnt like" my aunt.

Apparently this car had something against my aunt. Every single time she drove it something went wrong with the power steering. Cavitated pumps, bad belts, blown pumps, the very last time she drove it, man it was a mess. Barely made it home, howling, smoking, fluid sprayed all over the place under the hood. Really should have been on a hook.

Now you soul guys might explain it one way as "THE CAR DIDNT LIKE HER" or some other rationalization bordering on the edge of psychotic.

I couldn't be that my aunt was constantly trying to maneuver the big caddy by bouncing the steering wheel off the locks. Sometimes she would pull it hard against the locks while trying to park it. Parallel parking was worse.

  2. You insinuate that your car....one of your cars, doesn't like the woman your with, and ran poorly because of it. You posted this on the HAMB, and take offence when someone gets a little sarcastic? How long have you been here? Lighten up and have some fun!:D

This is a very entertaining thread! Because of the sarcastic remarks! Without those it would be just stupid!

Thats the point of this thread. Light hearted fun. I felt like he was being rude and condescending. On a light hearted silly thread, especially on the 6th or so page and when my post fits in with 90% of of the other posts, I get jumped on? And 31Vickywithahemi makes fun of my use of ......... periods? Maybe I should lighten up, but I came in the door with a good attitude about this thread and you guys are ruining the fun of it. In the context of this thread I'm not the odd man out.

...Or maybe I just need a hug and to talk about my feelings..

  8. Wow!! H.A.M.B. imitates life! Some of us are wayyy too pragmatic, and some of us are wayyy too whimsical. If we were sitting around in the shop, face to face, swilling beers, would we be fighting?

You mean like this circle jerk, that you have been attracted to enough that you have posted on it five times?

  12. Yeah, that's it. Sorry guys!

I remember being upset when I found out about Santa Clause, to this day I feel bad he has to do all that in such a far away place all year long. Then give it all away on one night by himself . I mean that's incredible. Thank goodness some of them elfs are hot little strippers or the poor man would go insane. I found out about them when I was old enough to understand Santa's little helpers..

While this thread has been an entertaining read with lots of interesting stories and some outright nonsense it has been just that,a way to pass some idle time.

Anyone with half a brain knows that vehicles are inanimate objects and have no soul.

Anything else is just fabrication and projection of owners who feel things themselves.

Does an old car have a soul? More importantly, does my old car have a soul? How old does a car have to be to have a soul? Is there a predetermined age a car has to achieve to have a soul?

I guess, maybe I'm not understanding this car soul thing clearly.

For it to have a soul, doesn't it have to be alive? My coupe was alive for a while yesterday, I was driving it around. I haven't started it today, yet, so I'm not sure it will be alive today, but I expect it would start. In the time between the time it ran yesterday and the next time it runs, was it considered dead? I mean, it showed no sign of life.

I'm getting concerned a bit here, my coupe was new in 48. Supposedly it spent the first few years as a cop car, then spent the next 60 or so years sitting in various locations with various owners before it came here. It took me a couple years to make it a functioning car again, but very little of its original components remain, Most of the new components came from one other vehicle, have I merged two different souls together? What if the don't get along, you know like many married couples that get divorced? Maybe the vehicle the "new" components came from was not old enough to have a soul, I'm so confused.

This name the car thing has me curious as well. I too have named each of my vehicles, but it was mostly for identification purposes, the coupe is named, well, The Coupe, and my truck is named The Dakota, and my wife's car is the PT. My old 4x4 was maned Big Blue because it was big and blue. I also have a difficult time determining if a vehicle is a male or a female, but I have found myself talking to each one of then on occasion. Things I usually say to my vehicles are usually not very nice, if it doesn't want to start, I might call it "a stupid bitch" or even a "stupid son of a bitch". When it finally starts I might say "good girl" or "good boy". if it does something I'm impressed with I might call it "my baby". When Big Blue got crashed and I was able to walk away, I said "thanks Big Guy", but I'm not sure it was directed towards the truck.

All this makes my head hurt.

I hear The Coupe calling me to come and work on her. Or maybe it was the guy on the radio telling me it was going to get cold again, and I remembered a cool draft coming from the passenger side of the coupe that I want to drive this weekend.

I don't believe cars have souls. I think as we work on them, they become part of what we identify with. We get to know the quarks and the limits of the combination of parts that make up each mechanical object we call cars and trucks have and anticipate possible upcoming issues and are more receptive to changes in things that differ from the normal patterns that have been established over time. Wouldn't surprise me, just look at their faces.
They have more personality to them than any new car

This has the potential to become a big philosophy theological debate.

  18. More likely a debate amongst the delusional, philosophers and theologians are busy today.

But please don't listen to me, I'm just riddled with jealousy. Apparently I have something wrong with me and my cars are not allowing me to see their soul, I say my problem is sanity and firm grasp of reality but I could be all fucked up.

Naaaah, do you sometimes talk to your car?
    Throw wrenches in-its-general direction?
Ever engage in larger-than-life stories about exploits where the car was a contributor?
Added up the sacrifices ($$$) it took to make 'her' road-ready?

Nope, just an in-animate pile of old, cast-off junk.
End of sermon. Send donations to therapist Rev. Curb. above. ;)

Sure glad I retired and moved to Florida. I notice most of these wild and weird comments are coming from the midwest. I always knew those people were sort of different. :( Now if you'll excuse me some of my cars are calling for me.
They mostly came from Illinois too!:D Mine are mostly red colored. They are fiesty little bitches. At least the yeller one, Smily, is always smiling. :D
The 55 wagon has a different engine, tranny, and most other things. I think it's got a split personality. I got rid if the pink 49 Ford. That thing was gay!

  21. Not usually talking in general, but have been known to "mother fuck" a bolt or two.
Never got mad at a car for being a car. Suppose that if one started talking shit to me I might.
Cars play a part in tales sure. Its kind of hard to tell a story about an axe murderer without mentioning the axe. However unless the axe has a mind of its own it really isn't the start of the story. Does an axe have a soul ?
Adding dollars is different for everyone and every car. Sometimes dollars matter and sometimes they don't.

My first car, triggered a lot of memories because so many things happened there for me. Kind of like how a smell or song triggers your memory. All the work, all the time with my dad, all the fun, all the trouble, first stinky finger, parades, dates, all the adolescent milestones. That car was an extension of me for sure. I didn't like sending it to the boneyard and it really upset me. Not because I thought it had a soul, but because I really liked the car. Rust had its way and there was no way to get the time to fix it. I look quite frequently for 68 Bonneville convertible because it was a great car.

Had a truck once that didnt want me to sell it im pretty sure.

Of topic 68 chevy 3/4 4wd . 44 inch ground hawgs and OD green . Drove it all through highschool , wrenched on it all the time and pretty much lived in that truck .

Came time for me to get something a little more practical out of high school and i needed to sell it .

First person coming got involved in a head on collision about 5miles from my house . sent to the hospital , thenk god they survived but was in bad shape for awhile.

Second set of folks came to look at it , called me from the Marathon Gas station in Shelbyville. I said " we dont have a marathon station in shelbyville" ....... They drove to Shelbyville Indiana instead of shelbyville Illinois.

Third guy i told on the phone " she doesnt want to be sold , last two buyers have not had good luck" so he gets up that morning and when walking across the deck of his trailer sliped and broke his leg. He showed up 3 days later on crutches with a full leg cast and said " i dont care what she thinks , that bitch is comin home with me .

Of course they do! Have none of you guys seen "Herbie goes to monte-freakin'-carlo"?:D

Cars with souls? Noway José. But it is very easy to form a bond close enough to project a personality onto one, imbuing it with human style eccentricities. I sometimes talk nicely to my truck, thank her (there you go, feminine) for a job well done and being reliable and well-behaved in the vain hope that this kind of superstitious stupidity will in some way encourage her to be nice to me in return. I know it's delusional and sadly lunatic but it's just what I do. And let's face it I'm not hurting anyone.

I agree old unrestored car do have Soul. Over the years I'm enjoying more and more unrestored car. I find them to have a style or soul. Over restoring a car you lose something...

As much as we try not to think about it, our beloved Cars were made by humans for the purpose of making MONEY. Only people have souls and the longer I live (68 yesterday) the more I think that having souls is an unused option in most people.

Can't help not check back here now and then. Ya notice how Illinois keeps comin up here? I told ya them guys are weird! Some of my cars keep wantin to go back there. I don't think the cars really have a soul. It's something in the corn pollen back there.
Cars may not have an actual soul but we put so much time and sweat into them we do get attached in some odd ways. ;)
At least a car doesn't bitch and moan if you spend more time with one of the others or don't take it out all the time. :D

Well HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you. May the soul of your 39 watch over you. :D My 39 Ford is probably pretty pissed at me for locking her up for so many years and not playing with her.
