i bought a crestliner, wheel, and i need the column that has a keyway, not splined? i currently have a crestliner wheel on my car, and thought it would be a direct swap because same wheel, but i wasnt aware that they made hte steering wheel with two different attaching methods, andone have any idea where i cna get a keywayed, shaft? any help would be apprecuiated. thanks mike w
Yes those wheels where sold threw bell auto parts in California either way, keyed or splined. I have 2 cars with keyed crestliner wheels. It looks like they just used a tapered teamed through the hole and added a keyway.
One of your buddy's must have a 28-48 ford steering shaft laying around. I have an extra but the bushing surface is pretty rust-pitted. I doubt youd like it. Might be able to cut the tapered/keyed portion off and weld it to your existing shaft. If so, let me know and it's yours for a paltry 15 bucks and I'll pay shipping but you'll only get the last 2-3 inches of the shaft with the keyed part. PM me if you want mine.
The original were all splined, the reproductions I heard were going to be offered in a key way/ or splined . This may have changed, I had a thread a while back. I bought a Crestliner wheel, and it was altered to a key way. I had to have it restored and a core splined hub installed.
I put a keyed '51 Merc accessory wheel on my splined shaft GM style column. The spline fits tight inside the taper of the steering wheel, but I cut a keyway in the shaft as well to match the keyway in the wheel. No problems with nearly 6 months of daily driving and over 1500 miles.
I put a 51 wheel on my aftermarket column with a spline. I carefully whitlled away the plastic in the 51 hub to expose the keyway slug that was welded in and cut it out leaving the bars of the wheel untouched basicly. Did the same with a old gm wheel and whitlled it down to fit in the 51. friction fitted it in the 51 and carefully put the assy on the column to center it. Tacked with a mig and finish welded it on the bench. There was only welds top and bottom which didn't take long and did not burn the surrounding plastics. The hub was large enough to to do this.
We have tapered keyway shafts we use in some of our 40 columns. They are about 40 in. Long and have the corect keyway for you wheel. We don't usualy sell them or recomend welding them but if you want pm me and i will get you a price
Not to highjack your post but I'm curious what folks are using for a steering column tube and collar? Let me phrase it like this...40 ford wheels look best with a forty tube and collar but what are folks using with their crestliners? I think I'm gonna put a white one in my coupe but need to know what column to look for at swaps. Thanks in advance. JohnnyA
Not that I know everything, but I think that some of the '49 Fords still had taper and key steering column shafts. I have an original (not Crestliner) '49 Ford steering wheel that is taper and key. I was under the impression that these wheels were first sold as an accessory wheel for the '49 Ford, and then as standard equipment on the '50 Crestliner. I have seen the Crestliner/ accessory wheels in both taper and key and splined arrangements. I have also seen them in both white and black. I also have a '53 style accessory wheel that is taper and key. That one is still throwing me for a loop.
my 53 K wheel is also tapered key. A guy in the V8 club told me that you could order one that way from a Ford dealer for an older car beings they were an "accessory"
A previous owner cut out the wires on my horn ring, 1950 Crestliner. I rewired and got the horns working but they honk when no one is touching the car. I wonder if there should be a spring under the horn ring. Anyone know or have exploded views? thanks
