Hi i am in the process of fitting a mcculloch vs-57 supercharger to a chrysler industrial 265 six with tripple down draft strombergs going to blow through wondering if any one has done this and know of possible problems motor has been rebuilt mild cam balanced crank and running a 318 harmonic balancer do these bottom ends cope head gaskets ect. any info appreciated thanks dub .
The McCulloch is a good match to your engine. They were made for flatheads of about that size, the company tested them on 51 and 52 Ford V8s before introduction and Kaiser offered them on their 140HP 226 cu in six. You don't need triple carbs with a blower, the blower supplies all the air your engine needs. You do have to enlarge the main jet so it gets enough gas. Stock McCulloch only gives 4 or 5 lbs of boost. This is not enough to overstress your engine. High revs are bad for such a long stroke engine. If you can get modern light weight pistons and low tension rings it will be all to the good. Don't go too wild on the cam, you don't need it and too much overlap lets the mixture blow out the exhaust. Headers or dual exhaust by a split manifold will help. One trouble spot on a supercharged flathead is exhaust valve cooling. Anything to get the exhaust out and keep the valve cool is good. It's not just the valve but the valve seat too. This area is hard to cool because it is so close to the cylinder. Chrysler products are better in this area than some other flatheads because they have more generous cooling p***ages. The guy to talk to about this is John Erb. He is a piston and McCulloch expert from way back. Best way to contact him is by phone. I don't have the number but a web search should turn it up.
Just subscribed to this thread .............. But I want to see pics! Sounds like a very interesting build. Please keep us posted.
