My 1958 Ranchero has the original 5V limiter to operate the gauges. Can I replace that obsolete bimetal limiter with a solid state LM7805 voltage limiter? Thanks.
http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/ivr/improved_design_solid_state_IVR.htm I did this and it works well.
Ron Francis makes a good one also. Solid state. Couple types, depending on how much amp draw will be used. My RF unit has been in my car for about 10-12 yrs or more.
i made one like whats in post #2 for my plymouth, but in my brothers shoebox i just used a ignition resister and it work just fine to
The LM7805 should be fine. There is a thread in the tech archive that discusses the LM7806 for 6v purposes: "How to Build a Voltage Reducer for $3". It is essentially the same process.
