What is the correct hook up to utilize a newer tach to a Vertex Mag? I feel silly asking this question but have never run a mag before.

Kirk unless you have a mag specific tach you will have to use a converter box.
Autometer makes one but be sure you order the one for an internal coil vertex as they are different. Same way for shift lights.
You might also look up FIE or Fuel Injection Enterprizes. He does a lot with both Vertex and now owns Mallorys magnetos. Spud is very sharp.
I do not believe Autometer makes a tach for the internal coil Vertex anymore, but could be wrong.

I appreciate your quick response. I should've realized that an external box is needed. I will take my findings and go convertor box hunting!

I haven't needed one for about ten years, but I think Speedway still sells the little induction adapters that work off a plug wire. I've used a couple on sprint cars and supers, and they work great.
