as the ***le says,I'm looking to lower the front of my '55 C-3. Would taking a few leaf springs out of each pack make a difference,or just give me problems? The truck has about 7 or 8 leaves in each pack. I don't need the truck to be slammed to the ground but want the front of the truck to somewhat match the rear, which was lowered this past winter. EDIT: I did forget to mention that the truck still has its original front straight axle, and i'm not really interested in doing a frame swap at the moment,as everything works fine on the stock frame.
I have a 54 took 3 out of each...handled not too bad, and looks waaaay better ...ran that for a year then put a fatman kit in it....money well spent
On the Ford's of that era, guys generally take out every other spring in the spring pack. From what I hear the safest thing to do is to not remove two springs that are next to each other. I hear that the ride will also be softer with the springs removed, of course carrying capacity will suffer. Another option maybe to stretch the axle, Sids dropped axles has some dodge stuff on his website.
Dropping straight axles should be covered in the tech section, but that requires way more work than just pulling springs. So yea, just pull every-other spring, should lower it 2-3 inches.
When removing springs I like to keep the distance from the end of each spring the same. So I remove the ones that are closest to each other. I have found out if you remove two that are together and have a big gap between springs over time and driving the springs really start to flatten out. Just remember the short springs help hold the arch in your spring pack. Don't remove to many of those. I like to remove one long and one short. If needed I do drop the Dodge axles up to 3" over stock for those trucks. www.droppedaxles.com
