I am considering putting a 2.3 liter turbo chassis under my little falcon (which is my parts car for my other falcon). They are cheap and plentiful.

If it originally came with a 4 cylinder, yes.

Yes, I am planning on a 2.4 A853 from a Neon SRT-4 with a trans from a 4 Cyl Dakota to put in a lakes modified T. I have an OT 2005 SRT-4 with some work done to it and it gets 32MPG in a 3000 Lb car @ 75 MPH while I have run a best of 11.38 @ 128MPH with 480HP at the wheels. The 2.4 bottom end is pretty much bullet proof up to ~ 500 WHP as well. In a RWD car that is 1000 Lbs lighter it should be plenty of fun.

I have a friend with an OT japanese car that's turbocharged. 301 at the wheels with 315 lb/ft of torque in a 2700 pound car, daily driven. Do some research before you run your mouth. Turbocharging is the best thing ever for a street car, power when you want it, awesome mileage when you don't

I have a 2.2l s10 4 cylinder in my 1965 c10. all the guys who heard about it while it was in process said a lot of the same things as in this thread, not enough power, not enough torque, dog on the highway, poor gas mileage hauling the big truck around, etc etc. I started driving it and everyone was wrong.

runs great. idles like a kitten and accelerates just like a normal truck. I have 10" wide rear wheels with 295 wide tires and it just goes and goes. 75mph on the highway no sweat. 22mpg combined, and thats with half a tank of two year old gas in it. its not going to win any stoplight races but I have another 4 cylinder car for that, 263hp and 280tq bone stock.

Its not for everyone, but mine worked out great. I would do it again without hesitation.

  11. I'm thinking very hard about putting a 2.3L Ford in my '27 roadster (or RPU) when I start building it next spring. Had never thought about one for a larger vehicle, but after joedoh's post above, I'd consider it now.

I want to put a Volvo 4 valve (per cylinder) DOHC head on it. Not sure that'll happen, but it sure sounds and looks like a neat idea.

the refocus thread says "1965 and below". Thats a direct quote.

and if you yourself have "loosed" your way, by all means tighten it up.

traditional hotrodding then was about using what was cheap and plentiful and largely ignored that made your rod better. yes, I know that EVERYONE in the 50's and 60s had a 32 ford with a flathead or a hemi or mercury 2 door sleds with all those rare and unobtanium period pieces. So I have something to aspire to if I "lose" my way and want to find it again.

I'd be better off using a rubber band. At least I'd get better mileage.

I would rather slam my dick in a car door than contemplate a four cylinder, there's more to life than MPG!

    Avgas,
I'd bet ya a beer that if someone was to hand you a totally free, ready to run Offy (or Miller, even) you'd wish you still had your dick. But who can afford one? Not many... so my "Offy" will have to be a super reliable, super efficient and super powerful, fairly new, all aluminum I-4. I'm fairly sure I can dress it down to look a little more vintage. I get it but my thoughts were hovering around a Pinto, Toyota or European engine, remember only a V8 sounds like a V8!

I'll give you that fer sure. Most of all, I'd love to get my hands on a new Chevy I-4 midget motor? All laid over and nasty. But I'd have to rob a few more convenience stores for that. Gary

A straight-8 will sound like a V8 if the exhaust manifolding is split accordingly. With a conventional 4-4 crank, splitting the manifolds 1278/3456 would give a V8 sound. With a Packard-style 2-4-2 crank, a 1234/5678 split would give the same result.

Likewise anything cobbled up out of two in-line fours can sound like a V8 if the cranks are co-ordinated and the manifolding grouped to do so.

I've been noticing that aural appeal is as much down to cam as cylinder configuration. For instance, though you'd never mistake them, an inline 5 with a huge cam has much the same kind of appeal as a stout V8.

Fours with big cams tend to want exhaust systems designed to emphasize the lower registers, lest you get that nasal blare (it's appealing in something like an early Mini Cooper, say, or an Alfasud, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.) I suppose the fart can came about in a not entirely successful effort to do that as a bolt-on.

    A monoplane crank in a V8 doesn't sound like a V8 either.

I have a F5 thinking about putting a Alis- Chalmers 4 diesel in it . It is the same as a BT4 cummings. But I also have a 331 hemi sitting on the floor. HHUUUMMMM
