its safe to say were screwed for a couple days ..every street light for about 5 miles around are out nothng but candles in windows and people looking outside to see how the weather is holding up. i was driving around earlier but the wind is so bad and my truck has a 6 inch lift in it so i was getting blown almost off the road so i called it a night drove west up the island for the night ill go check my cars in the a.m hopeing all is good ...keep ya fingers crossed for me ..
Heres hoping everything turns out ok for you guys. I am a long way off but it looks like a monster storm from down here. Save your gas. I know from tornado experience that no power means no transportation for a while.
Sitting here in lil ol New Zealand watching the evening news, looks terrible . Thoughts go out to all affected, keep your loved ones safe . .
We're in Maryland. The coast got hit, floods & 300,000 lost power. Heavy snow in the west but all in all, we made out good. Seems like tge eye p***ed right over us so not as bad. Prayers to all....
I'm in West Islip just north of the tracks. We lost power for maybe 6 hours total. People all around us, no power.... Next door to me this huge tree went down into the street, no explanation for how it missed the overhead wires. Anything south of 27A (Monttauk Hwy) could be 6' under water in places. Fire Island was breached and the roadway on the south end of the Robert Moses water tower went into the drink. I g***ed up Sunday, did my shopping Saturday so we were fine. Did some clean up on Tuesday, making an attempt to go to work in a few... no idea if we're open. Email and phone messages don't go through. Bob
I see it's a mess there. Living in Georgia now for 15 years. Was a L.I.er, still got family in the city. Hey Bob, I worked at Herbee motors on Sunrise Hwy for 10 years in West Islip before moving to Georgia. We might have crossed paths at one time. Maybe at Mustang Sally's after work. Hope everyone up there is safe and sound. Ken
I live close to Herbee Dodge. I wasn't much for bars though, Mustang Sallys has changed hands a few times in the past few years. I'm doing better than most by far. 100 waterfront houses in Lindenhurst possibly totally ruined. Still lots of power out all over the Island. I went to work earlier, no power... did the sign-in sheet thing and went home. Bob
As a former LI'ander and having lived in south Sayville, I'm sure my old house has water. I was only 6 houses from the great south bay. Sounds like it was pretty much like the hurricane of '38 I always heard so much about. Our prayers and thoughts out to those who have suffered damage and worse yet, lost their homes. I just hope everyone is safe ....
South Sayville... probably under water. The foot of 231 in Babylon was flooded, water up Deer Park Ave, I never ever saw that before. I cut through Brigh****ers Village before, big old trees down all over, but the roads are clear. Fire Island has a new inlet out east, not sure where. 4 dead on LI, 2 from falling trees. Bob
here in shirley / mastic beach is pure devistation homes gone ocean mixed with the bay.homes washed away. no power. trees down on almost every block. people just getting back to there homes to find nothing. there belongings are washed out into the middle of the roads. my heart goes out to all of them. my parents live 1 block off of wm floyd and 4 blocks south of it .so there 6 blocks from the beach. the water only came up 4 blocks so thank god they didnt get the water and barely got the wind. so its safe to say they were lucky.just some minor clean up
I saw that on the news... looked really bad. I had looked at a few houses on the bay when I was house hunting, glad I took the high ground. The road just north of the LIRR tracks, there are cars parked along it, apparently from people south of Montauk Hwy. A smart move. Lindenhurst by the bay took an enormous hit, some houses also washed out, close to 100 may have to be taken down. Bob
My wife, my father and I went down to New Orleans after Katrina to help clean up, so I can certainly imagine how bad it is. They will never be the same. My heart and prayers go out to all that were affected. May God Bless you and yours in these difficult and tragic times.
I used to live in Shirley, on Corbin Ave behind fire island pizza. I was there for 10 years, had plenty of storms, but nothing like this while I was there. Ken
im in north shirley made it through the storm ok no damage, lost power last nite due to a downed tree resting on wires and blew transformer out, have generator thank god looks like a week to 10 days ,gas stations are open to get gas ,lots of trees down on every block ..90+ mph winds tues evening, i think gloria was much worse but this was a close second...
To think that was only a little old cat 1 storm. Ya don't even need to experience a cat 4 or 5 unit. Bet this gets your attention...these hurricanes are serious stuff. The wind just won't stop, like being on top a car in the dark in the rain going 80+ MPH for hours. Pick up the pieces and keep going guys.
