track nose dimensions? and a cool idea for a track nose.

I thought it would be cool to make a track nose for a 33/34 ford out of an inverted Edsel grill. What do you guys think?

Does anyone know the dimensions of the track nose on the Pierson brothes coupe? Or any similar style track nose. Height, width, and depth?

 

The Edsel grill is 10" wide and 21" tall. It should make an excellent grill opening for a track nose

 

I saw a T roadster with a Edsel grill and it looked like hell, and I'm not sure inverting it would be any different. If you look at almost every track nose including the Pierson coupe, they are pretty curved and are slanted back a lot. In case you haven't checked out the vintage sprint car thread here, there are tons of different track noses there and I swear that some of them are dead ringers for sectioned down Oliver tractor grills like this.

 

I never liked the nose on the Pierson brothers coupe ….. I always have liked the one on the so - cal car better.

A bunch of good lookin ones have been made by simply using the back half’s of 2 late 30’s to ? rear fenders.

I like the Oliver grill. IMHO.

 

Speaking of tractors, if you find the right one, some of the old tractor gas tanks make a nice nose.

 

Those Edsel grills stuck on rods are just WRONG. I've been playing with left over pieces of banged up fenders to make a nose for my boat tail but haven't got anything ready for a photo yet.

I had one mocked up with a the rear potion of a 48-54 Chev pickup rear fenders. It seemed to be a good fit.

A more slender look would be to use 46-48 GM front fender extensions that bolt to the door. You would need to add material between them to get the correct width

 

No....i would flip the Edsel grill. I have some sketches i will put up

 

for a track nose it won't work. not aesthtically, not litterally, not upside down.

call it a flipped upsidedown edsel nose grill. the green T is spot on.

I think the grill on that brown one is only one of many problems it has and not the most uglifying. The IFS and square headlights are worse and the top looks kinda like it belongs on a covered wagon. That green car is cool.

Unfortunately no...but it didnt take much work to make it look right

 

Does anyone know the dimensions of the grill for a 33/34 ford. Height and width where it connects to the hood?

My wife says that I am crazy to like anything Edsel, she may be right.

 

Edsel grilles are cool...

I put one in a sportscar.

 

METALSHAPES has it in spades. It is a lesson in proportions.

The pics that show Edsel grilles worked into noses just don't look good tho.
Maybe you'll pull it off, then again, maybe not. Have a go and see what you think.

I like it! Flipping the grill up-side-down puts the wide part at the bottom, which makes it look good to my eye. But when I imagine it on a 34 Ford, I'm not sure it would work up-side-down because of the rest of the car's body lines.

It didn't work right-side-up on this brown car because it looked out of place with the rest of the nose's lines. I think if it were up-side down, shorter, and rounded back at the top to follow the rest lines of the nose, it would have looked better. Of course, they aren't made out of Play Dough, so that would be a little hard to do.



It works on this car, because it mimics the lines of the cowl and hood.






It looks "right" in Metalshape's sports car because the fenders form a V, as does the grill.






I like this nose by itself. The up-side-down Edsel grill follows the lines of the nose. It would look great on a lakes modified T.



Also, with it being up-side-down, it wouldn't be immediately obvious that it's an Edsel grill. It could be fun to watch people put it together.

However, that nose doesn't follow the lines of a 34 Ford. It needs to be wider at the top and narrower at the bottom to fit the lines of the hood, body, and fenders.



I can imagine it right-side-up - with it's flat top matching the flat hood and it's narrowing, rounded bottom snuggling nicely between the fenders. It would be narrower than the original grill, so you'd have a lot of solid area on the front of the car. That would give it a nice salt racer look, if that's what you're after.
