I know this post is old as sin, but I have to tell a story that I just got reminded of. Bought the wife a new OT car with heated leather seats. We get into this argument one day over the fact that the seat warmers cant produce heat until the car is warmed up. She was truly convinced that the seat warmers were part of the car HVAC system, and not an electrical concoction in the seats. I think the bulk of the argument was me leading her on so I could get a chuckle. Still laughing about that one.
I used a compact Vintage Air Heater, and hid it with a swap meet cover that had doors to direct the heat, it looks old and works very well.
If you have an AC/DC inverter in your car, you may think about an RV 12volt Heater. Put it in and take it out as needed.
Lets see more pics of heaters in Roadsters. Mounted in Middle? P***enger side? Pics of heater hoses? Anyone have pics?
Here's the heater in my roadster, it mounts in front of the firewall. It's made of aluminum, for optimum heat transfer.
NAPA has a 12v motor that replaces the older 6 v and old timey knob switch that lights up when on. Wish I would have installed in the sedan before now and the A gets one including the seat heaters.
In all seriousness I am installing seat heaters but also a firewall mounted heater. I am over my macho days of thinking its cool to freeze my *** off. lol
seat heat is cheap and easy now.............doesn't do much for my ears, though. Wonder if KIRK! ever got warmed up?
Kirk, let me give you another option. I didn't want to put a heater in my Deuce roadster but because I live in NY it gets cold in early spring and the fall. I purchased a heated vest from a company called Gerbling. They make heated clothing for bikers, and plugs into a lighter socket. I put the vest under a jacket and it really gets quite hot, just a suggestion.
^^ That's the ticket, I have one too. Plus you can wear it when riding in your buddys' cars while they freeze.
@woodiewagon46 - Just an FYI ... This thread is 8+ years old (i.e., started on February 13, 2007) @KIRK! finished his "Legion Special" modified in late 2010 ... and sold it in July of 2012.
One roadster owner , with a under dash heater put snaps on the underside of his dash (facing down) and has a small Blanket that snaps to the dash , and gets tucked between the cushions when in use , keeping his legs warm and with a coat does very well !
I've got a Gerbing liner and I've ridden motorcycles down to freezing temps in Iowa, I am cold blooded and I never turned the control past the half way mark, I hope my next project is an open car and I will use a heater and the liner, I don't drive well when I am shivering
HEATER---In roadster??---You gotta be ****tin' me! Just add more coats with gloves---Don't be such a *****!
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Universal-Fit-Street-Rod-Heater-12-Volt-20-000-BTU,73715.html Spray it Matt black and tuck it up out of sight..... I ran a big heater behind the seat of a 34 3 window coupe...I ran the tubes under the floor and and put a vent in the rear parcel shelf....it was like an oven in there even in deepest winter......it makes a car a year round option in cooler climes.
I followed the build of Kirks car, but don't remember what he ended up going with for heat. That was a great little car, I hope the new owners a Hamber, and is enjoying it.
True, but winter comes every year and this question rears it's head when the leaves start to fall. HRP
Yep it's an old thread and the self styled hard core roadster brigade that lives in the south or has a body that handles below 0 weather in a T shirt an shorts can stay without their heaters in roadsters or rods but I've froze my *** off enough in my truck with a working heater in seriously cold weather enough I want a heater in the roadster I am putting together and will probably run a fitted manage****pit cover over the p***enger seat and on the side to manage a few cool weather trips. When my buddy had his 29 A roadster he and his wife and daughter would put on their snowmobile suits and helmets for cold weather runs (the car had a rumble seat) . That is always an option.
I have a stock manifold heater in my 28 Phaeton it kinda keeps the cold of your legs. I do have plans to do some winter driving in the car i will let you know how well it works then.
