shoebox FD stearing dillema

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by eugene vik, Oct 31, 2012.

  1. just got a 1951 ford with proabboly a mustang stering box stuck close to firewall, of course the steringarm points forward so the idler points in the oppowsite direction
so my center stearing link has a hook up like a Z being hooked to a arm each way
so it there a fitment problem with the stock box which i assume is close to the crossmember?? i got a 302 engine, and a 8 in body chanel causes some alignment problems

i can fabricate most anything but am not in love with it at old age but the floorshift is gonna be a real cut and weld that 8 in chanel throws a lot of stuff in the floor off!!!

being tired and old if anyone has some trick parts to do this decent i would be interested as my junkyard diving days ended about 25 year ago

  2. any ideas out there today?

  3. This was bit challanging to read and make a vision of at the same time. A photo or two would be a large help. The question is does it work and what exactly are you needing to change and why?

I think the reason for his wanting to change it is pretty simple. the pitman and idler arm aren't in matching swings and most likely the relationship of the front tires is changing on turns.

We still need those photos Eugene so we can see what you have and someone can figure out something that might be a lot better. I think the first hacked up tierod I ever saw was on a shoebox ford with an overhead engine in it that a friend had on his hoist at his station in the early 60's. That was normal with engine swaps in those then.

Stock box and linkage and correct oil pan that clears the steering linkage.
