What is involved in the removal of the friction plate on the fluid flywheel? Is there some form of carbon seal that can be damaged in doing so? I'm rebuilding a manual 4 speed with fluid drive.

Remove the transmission then take out the clutch as you would on a typical manual trans 3 speed car.

The clutch is on a small flywheel which fastens on the back of the Fluid Drive unit. You do not need to disturb the Fluid Drive unit or its seal except of course, when you remove the transmission shaft from the Fluid Drive. Use ordinary care when removing and replacing the transmission.

It is recommended to mark the clutch housing or pressure plate so you can put it back in the same position.

The whole unit is at a gear shop, so I don't have to worry about the nitty gritty. This Q comes from the owner, who wants to re surface the plate so as to work more efficiently with the clutch plate.
