Curious.....Whats a decent 337 flathead engine worth?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Yohns Kustom Fabrikation, Nov 3, 2012.

  1. Came across a pretty clean little 337 engine out of a big ford truck. What are these ancient beasts worth?

Not much. No real reason to keep or restore. This is a true boat anchor.

  3. I feel the same way but isnt this what alot of "period rods" would use?? Traditional...

There heavy and have no real hot potential. Unless you are restoring a period truck or Lincoln they just are not of much value. Heads are thick and heavy, rear mount dist. Kinda limited on any aftermarket hop-up parts. Honestly they are worth more in scrap value. Don't get me erring they are neat engines. I have two in my collection.

I hauled one and it's 3 speed transmission to the scrap yard a few years ago. It came out of a buddies 49 Lincoln. I thought I would eventually do something with them but I finally got tired of tripping over it.

I felt bad doing that but I just coudn't find anyone who wanted it.

If you were closer, I'd make you an offer-just so I'd have a spare. Everybody puts them down but they make as much sense as a Flathead Caddy. Same architecture as a Flathead Ford-just bigger. I have one in my '53 F-100 and I love it. The fact that yours came out of a truck means it has a flywheel & clutch with a bell housing that's adaptable to later transmissions. (Most of the Lincolns had Hydramatics and are difficult to impossible to hook up to anything else.). Given the recent trend to use odd ball engines in the name of "traditionalism" (Straight eight Pontiacs, Packards. etc), I don't see a 337 as scrap iron or a boat anchor.

  10. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't one of the problems with the 337 that it still only had three main bearings to support that big crankshaft. And if you tried to get it to rev higher it was prone to snap, there of it wasn't in the favor for the Hot Rodders?

What do you mean not much!!!
When I get my 51 F1 with my Lincoln Flattie in it and all done I will challenge you straight up in a drag race with your 50 F1 with your smaller flattie in it.

I have a NOS passenger side water pump for a '50-'51 Lincoln 337ci V12 still in its original box with the gasket and instructions and everything up for sale (OBO).. They aren't reproduced either.

And I see this thread saying they're worthless. Damn it.

Dale I guess they don't understand they do have the same architecture as flathead ford. They are like the flathead ford on steroids. I guess if most think they are worth hardly nothing then they will be cheaper for us.......

No, it wont turn 9000 RPM's. But in the truck they came in, they were kept at full throttle through the gears up to 3500 for ten years with only oil and spark plug changes. They had a bottom end that wouldn't stop.

At the going price, that would make a 337 worth about $1000 more.
