Did your brother own this car as well? 28-9 A 2-dr with nailhead Buick and Americans. Came to the mainland from Victoria. My buddy owned it in this pic from the late 70's early 80's. I think it appeared in Rod and Custom in the readers rides section in the late 60's. Pat
Man, this is good! Keep the stories and pictures coming! It's stories like these that hooked me as a kid and got me into cars. Thanks!
I never saw it red. It's looks terrible!!! But someone else owned it so it was their choice. I don't think you can put a restrictive covenent on how a car should look!! And no that wasn't a car of my brothers but he did start a tudor with a chev in it but sold it before completion. That left space in Dad's garage for mine!
So for my sixteenth birthday Mom and Dad says "We're Going to Disneyland" cool ! Here am I cruising in our 65 Falcon Futura, windows down, hair right back and two chicks in a Mustang convertible pull up.Now really quick I'm trying to get Mom and Dad to scrunch down low so I look alone but I don't think it worked! What a thrill -I'd never seen that many lanes going one way and fast .Golly they get there so quick and then turn around and scream back home. Me I was screamin' both ways! But I caught on! Anyway the first couple of negatives I found were of this car, taken in a gas station.I think there were ten of them distrubuted around the US for testing by local people. Do I remember right? And what were the results? Then it was off to visit this car in L.A.Tried to get Mom to take it for a spin but she said it wasn't an automatic! Sorry about the black and white pics, but it was either chrome for the "A" or colour and the"A" won!
The Ford Falcon that $teamer is talking about is shown in post #25 and his last post. It says a lot about how he and his family look after their cars, because that Ford Falcon is in $teamer's garage today!
Great pics of the '63 Chrysler turbine. I saw one at the Petersen Museum in 2010 a great looking car DSCF0771 by Jimmy Bs 1925 Chev, on Flickr DSCF0774 by Jimmy Bs 1925 Chev, on Flickr
So because we were down in LA my brother said to drop in and see one of his friends down there and see if he could get me some wheels for the "A" [I had not yet bought the Americans] Tex ran a fiberglass shop .and was an extra in western movies. I don't know if the shop still exists or if he made the big time in the movies.
Finally found the place and fell in love with his delivery truck! As luck would have it Tex said he had to make a delivery and would I like to come along He had a bunch of smaller fiberglas scoops and vents [none of which I could recognize] He said perhaps his buddy might have some wheels that I would like. Now cruizing in this truck was too much for this sixteen year old-I was on top of the world!! So we pull into the LA airport [I think that's where we were! Remember I'm from Canada and probably couldn't find my way home!Around back were about a hundred Mustang Fastbacks-White. Sorta plain. Inside the hanger were stacks of wheels, engines,I mean really trick stuff! Tex introduced me to this guy [I think his name was Carrol [might not be the right spelling] and he was gonna try and fix up these Mustangs.I mean they were just White in colour-plain and even though he put Blue stripes over the hood and roof.I couldn't see how he could make a dime on them! Any way he was most interested in my "A" and me and I never forgot his taking the time out for me-a kid from Canada. And no I didn't take any of the wheels but I should have probably returned his generosity and bought one of his Mustangs just to help him out financially! I wonder what those cars are worth today? You only get to travel through life once and I'd had more than my share of encounters with really nice people! And did I take pics? No I was too awestruck
Just in case you didn't catch on. I knew exactly who this guy was. And was amazed at how well he treated me-just a kid. So do you think I should have bought one??
wow! What an awesome thread, thanks for all the great photo's and sharing the storyline, the way you do, keeps me wanting more! subscribed and 5 stars! george.
Sorry I think I hijacked my own story! I drifted-but you do that at my age. Back to the "A" we toured around British Columbia for a couple of summers and really had a good time. A bunch of us drove up to Kamloops BC and did a show there. I remember we slept in tents or under the car. We had no money just a lot of fun!
Then I got a real job -Loggin',had a new car -the Ranchero, had "the lil' Conqueror" looking pretty good. What else could a guy ask for? A girl! So I got married-my idea! Quit loggin' and got a town job-my idea! Sold the Ranchero-my idea! Sold the Ardun for $350.00-my idea! Sold the wheels of the "A"-my idea! Sold the"A"-again my idea! Then I realized the real problem and got a divorce-Now that was really MY idea! but the car was gone Damm! It was involved in a minor accident on the way to Port Alberni and I have been unable to find out any info but I really would like to find her [the A!!] and make ammends so if anyone knows anything please help me out. As for Girls -I'm breakin' in a new one now and she seems to be working out-at least for the last forty years anyway. I think she's a keeper! And then there's my youngest son.I found this neat VW at the Portland swap meet,he found this Model "A" Which one did he choose?
Like I have said many times in this thread "That's another story" and it looks like we're "OUTATIME" !!
What an unfortunate and melancolie ending to such a great tale.Thankfully I see the story isn't really over. And please know there is an eager audience for your story's of rodding in the 60's. I probably enjoyed the story of the " Lil' Conqueror" even more than some because of the local(ish) history. And that a few of my friends and I are lucky enough to own a couple BC "survivor" hotrods, but for the most part can only daydream of what there past lives and builders were like. Your story(s) gives us a little insight into what was really going on in that time, so thanks. And hope you've got a few more for us.
Reading the stories like this is like a small adventure we get to live with the poster... Neat story involving your life with the cars.. And secretly--I'm hoping you went with the pickup for the boy even though I own my own red VW...
He did choose the pickup-That's a pic of it in his garage! It took him 20 years to do. And he also met a girl. The story ends better than mine. The girl's dad builds hot rods in Ontario.Sounds like a match made in Heaven if you ask me!! Den
Just found about where the Ardun went. The guy that bought it from me lived in Kelowna BC and about 15 years ago -so the story goes Don Garlits [of Swamp Rat fame] wanted to buy it but the price was too high, and a week later someone from Montreal phoned and literally drove all the way out to buy them! Then Don phoned back and wanted to buy- Too late-ya snooze ya lose! This story never ends! Now if I can only find whats left!
Dennis - any news on the search for your A tudor? Don't give up, somebody out there has it. Just got to find them!
What a great thread! Thanks for sharing the memories. The family Falcon, reminds me of the one my Grandma had, out in Lumby.
Does the Montrealer still have the heads? Reason I ask is my Dad's Ardun heads came from Canada. But that was about 25 years ago, and they were just the heads, no complete engine. Probably not the same ones.
