Need help on installing the gasket on a 32 5 window coupe. (opening windshield) specialty or roller tool needed? pics would really help if possible. Thanks in advance
Put the gasket in some hot soapy water so it gets soft and stretchy as you pull it in. Keep it lubed up with some more dishwashing soap as you push and pull it in. As you stretch it to get it to move keep pushing it in as you go. It takes patience and some time but you'll get it.
I put one on my 5 window not too long ago. I used a little wd40 and inserted one side of the rubber flange in the channel, then worked the other side in with a small flat blade screwdriver. Worked like a champ, took about 20 minutes to get in... Sam
We use dish soap and a flexible plastic spatula working on a soft blanket so we don't scratch the painted frame.
Best to use liquid dish detergent as a lubricant straight out of the bottle or slightly diluted with water. , it washes off easily and leaves no residue. Avoid products like penetrating oils or WD -40 as they may effect the rubber seal. Lay the gasket out flat and determine the front and back side. If you have a used windshield frame make sure that the seal track is cleaned out and free of rust and the track is sealed with a good coat of enamel paint to prevent rust. If its a new fame make sure it is also painted in the track. This paint will provide a smooth surface to help relax the pinch on the seal and you dont end up with extra material because you have pulled on the gasket to stretch it. Some people start in the top center of the frame and work to the corners, some start in one corner and work to the other. The trick is not to rush and stretch the gasket. I made a thin blade screw driver with a radiused and polished blade to help pop the lip into the frame.
The brand of gasket will make a LOT of difference as well. I had purchased a seal made by a company that rhymes with Vintique, but it was hard, too short, and wouldn't work into the groove at all. I finally ended up breaking the corners trying to stretch it into place. I then ordered a seal from Dennis Carpenter and it fit perfectly. I bet the guys on the ***embly line in 1932 didn't have it any better than the Carpenter product.
Good day all, New member here with a further question on the subject of the early ford (32) windshield rubber. I have a chopped 32 frame and rubber but am experiencing problems with fitting the rubber. The frame has a dovetail shaped channel, i.e. wider at its base than at its opening whereas the rubber seal is shaped as if to fit the dovetail on one side but square on the other side and unsurprisingly doesn't stay in the channel. I would have thought that the rubber should also be dovetailed to lock in to the channel. The frame and rubber seal were ordered into the UK for me and while the gasket is clearly marked Dennis-Carpenter the frame is unmarked although I am sure that they were ordered from the same place in the US. Does anyone have any bright ideas on the subject please?
