I've been checking the C/L for a red couch. I got a white one and cut the back out of it at the land fill before lettin it go. Truly a great idea done well.
I bought the column and wheel from a friend of a friend a few years ago, seeing the same wheel in your car made the decision an easy one Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Bought a bottle of Lexol yesterday and tried a sample on a scrap, soaked it pretty good, this morning the sample looked and felt ok, not much darker and not nearly as dry to the touch. I kind of like it clean and dry, don't want it too soft, thought about just Scotchgaurd but this stuff should do fine. Who's Herb Tarlick? That guy from WKRP?
Try Pecards leather conditioner. Vintage flight jacket collectors swear by it. Nourishes the leather while keeping the worn patina.
Clean the leather using Dove beauty soap it really works and is cheap at less than a £1 a bar, then apply the traditional connelly hide food, this takes some work but it is really good at revitalising old leather.
stopped at a carpet store on the way home and picked out a remnant for $20.00 pretty much done now, just a few minor details here and there total investment in materials is now right at about $100.00 not free and no where near profesional but clean, comfortable and functional for not much bread. I can live with that.
Looks great! I have always wondered why those 41-48 wheels have not caught in. They are beautiful! I predict them drying up and becoming very costly...
thanks Chris oh yeah, instead of oil I went with a spray dressing meant for suede to help seal it from dirt and wet
Just how damn cool is your idea !!!! Thanks for sharing !!! Next project looking for worn out sofas.... Wish me luck, can't tell ya how many I've seen sitting by the side of the road. One mans junk another ones treasure !!!!
I saw it in person, at the swindlers poker run ( that Chris WAS NOT at ) It is bad ass! The only problem is I think Paul may be hoarding all the free leather sofas on our local CL, I cant find any to save my ass ! Keep your eyes peeled for Paul's traditional interior shop, soon to open in the pnw!
My wife tells me the same thing. Great job on the upholstery. I can see an underground market for "vintage leather interiors" growing very well indeed.
Man , I just looked on CL in Denver --- there are 17 of them on just today! Red , green , black , several shades of brown, blue, tan all free and most in pretty decent condition. I bet if one looked in used furniture more could b found pretty cheap too.
Well , I think when I need upholstery for my roadster, I will be glad I live in Colorado not too far from Denver--- folks around here give a whole lot more stuff away than anywhere else! Just checked CL in Salt Lake --- zero--- LA -- 6 --Seattle -- 3 or 4 . There was a guy in Denver last week had a new set of repop deuce frame rails on for FREE!!! , I called him about 15 minutes after he listed them and somebody had beat me there --- well duuuuhh I would guess they ain't gonna last long!
We use a product called "Proofhide" made by Brooks (Brit company that makes high end cycling saddles. It'll help waterproof it, seal it up and keep it supple. Not super cheap though. Great idea! I love it!
