i found this in the trunk of a car! a chevy at the junk yard. does anyone know it's history as in when and what it was used for? the cap is NOT very tall and obviously does NOT fit on a distributor directly, maybe a magneto, or maybe a spacer/adapter to go onto a dizzy??? the wires go directly into the cap...it is a 2 piece style of cap, and a rubber "boot/gasket" seals and holds the wires into place...just like the coil wire, it is also the same way into the coil. i think it is way kool (the look) and want to use it, but i don't know how i would attach it to my dizzy!?!?!? by the way the top of the cap has -(M.MALLORY) molded into it.
That's the old flat cap, it only fits the old mallory dual point distributors. But I don't think those caps are made anymore so if it's in good shape it's not trash. You also need the mallory rotor. Should fit almost all old mallory 8 cylinder distributors. The coil looks like a voltmaster. I have on on my '47 and it works good. You need a mallory resistor to use it, but they are still available I think. Not solid gold, but a good score. Wish I had found it PS: The cap and the coil wire work the same way. Loosen the screws and the wires just push into place. Rubber boot holds them tight and seals out dirt. They are a pretty good setup. Especially on open hood cars in the rain.
I just found one of those today too and was thinking "is this a magneto" i was actually going to take my camera to work tommarow and take pictures for a post
I run one of those coils on my C-dan. It has been trouble free for three years now. Just unhooked it and went back to a vertex mag. The cap goes to a dual point. I have a few of them but could never get the wires properlly in the cap. Then I realised that it takes the skinny solid core wires like a mag. The best place to get these is at tractor supply Co. Get two sets of wires for a 9N ford tractor. There solid core, cheap, and look old. Good find JD
Kool, Kool, Kool!!! so does this mean if i buy a Mallory dual point dizzy, i can "just put this cap on it"???? Damn that seems TOOO easy! what am i missing? I also have the wires for the plugs AND the resistor!! everything was hooked together! here is the "clincher" the guy at the junk yard counter said" dude that looks cool but we don't honor coil warranties, so if you want to just take it I don't care, But you can't bring it back!!!" hmmm i said... I don't know... naw J/K i left and didn't look back! what mallory distributor...(that looks traditional, behind a 6 duece '63 edelbrock intake) can i get?? thanks for the info also, i am so stoked, and to think i was just gonna go home and have a Beer!!!...ken __________________
It only fits the OLD mallory distributors. It won't fit the new ones. If it was made before the late '60's this is the cap you need though.
Looks like the setup I had which was a Mallory Rev-Pol....stood for reversed polarity. It had a separate under-dash switch that byp***ed the ignition resistor.
Hey man, I need that stuff for my mallorey, it works with all of them but the mag I think! whats that gonna take to get that out of ya? I'll stop touching you in funny places if you give it to me.
Well in that case i am gonne "keep it forever"!!! I like funny places!! but actually i wanna use it in the '30 chevy coupe, but i was just talking to another guy and he may have a complete one for me, so maybe i'll get this one too you somehow... hows a full-on out of this world total car stripe job on the '49 fleetline sound, with a side draft intake? and i'll provide ALL the beer and buy you some new "1-shot"!!! BUT you would have to find a rotor, i don't have one.
We could work something like that out if you end up not needing it, not sure about the intake though yet. My plans for all the carbs off of it might be changing....I'm lookin at a hilborn injection set up now instead of the side drafts. I'll let you know, I'll cruise by this week end, what time WONT you be there?
hmmmm. well sorry i'll be here ALL weekend, i gotta set my block into the '49 to make some motor mounts and ****** mount! so if you come by just keep on going by and throw the beer over the fence for me! gordon has one of those on his '39, i didn't even see it! bet i could swap it out one night when it's at dannys house, and he wouldn't even know?!?!?! (it's been awhile since i had a midnight auto run)
