My beautiful 1960 cadillac was running great. It sat for couple months then went to drive it and was loading up, sputtering, and had some black smoke from exhaust. So, I gave it a tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, checked timing, oil. Has pertronix so points are out. Still ran terrible. Check vacuum with gauge and for any vaccuum leaks around carb base. Nothing. Carb was rebuilt last year and probably has 300 miles on it. So I put new edelbrock carb on and re adjusted everything. Still runnin like a terd, sputtering, stalling, and smells like flooding out. Any advice or knowledge would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks hamb.

Forgot to mention, compression is good, no knocking, and at 50-75mph is runs pretty decent.

"Sat a cpl of months"......Given the "quality" of today's gasoline, I'd try some fresh fuel, and see what happens. Do the easy stuff first.........

Yes! And fuel pump is working properly. Fueled it full with fresh premium and put cleaning additive.

I'd say it's today's ****py gas...I just had to have my gas tank boiled out because my car sat for almost a year... had to overhaul the carb, put on a new fuel filter and clean the hard lines to the tank...that **** tends to gum up everything...

Had similar problem. After trying everything else, took out Pertronix, put in points and condensor.............problem solved. Even though the Pertronix tested OK!

Wow! Never thought pertronix would be the problem. I'll try pulling valve covers first, good to check anyways. Then I'll go buy the points and give it a shot.

  10. In a few months time - the hard parts changing or failing is highly unlikely.
The gas changing in that amount if time is 100% certainty.
The fuel causing deterioration to the soft parts in your fuel system has a high probability.

Do you have 12 volts? Add a jumper wire from Batt to coil +. If it's not bad fuel. Then you have poor ignition!

I'd start with the stock carb rebuild, try to do 1 thing at a time so you know what it was.

I'm with Jeff K. and bobss396 - Why the hell would anyone use a new Edelbrock versus the stock Carter?

Uh, because (in the case of the three that I've used) they work great right out of the box, and for less than getting an original rebuilt. And, since I **** at rebuilding carbs, it's better than me working for hours on an original, and having it run the same, or worse.

    Just say'n...

I put edelbrock on in a moment of despair! It's supposed to be in a wedding this weekend and I had a new edelbrock 1604 sitting on shelf. Trying anything at this point. Tomorrow I'll put points in it. Pertronix has been on for few years and ran fine, but we will see what happens. Thanks for input!!

For some of us, the stock Caddy carb rebuild is pretty straight forward, for others.. not. This is one of the easier carbs to go through even for a novice.

I've got a 60 Coupe Deville, and the previous owner threw an Edelbrock carb on in place of the carter which needs a rebuild which I have in a box. No probs other than the lack of the hook up for the p***ing gear rod (or kick down)

Sorry, no advice on why yours is running bad
