Polishing an aluminium body.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by ratty_aussie, Nov 5, 2012.

  1. G'day everyone, just looking for some tip and tricks on machine buffing an aluminium body?

    Wool or foam pad?
    What sort of polish?
    Rpm of machine?

    Thanks in advance.

Hey ratty. You will probably get some answers here but since I was just recently checking out the Kirkham Cobras which are aluminum bodied (aluminium to you), I noticed they had some polishing information in their tech section here: http://www.kirkhammotorsports.com/about/technical I bet if you called them they might offer more info rather than being **** heads about "trade secrets".

I helped develop the method they use at Kirkhams. Send me a private message and I can tell you what I know... Perfect polish dot com is a great place to learn.

  4. You could also check with the vintage Airstream guys and see what they use

Airforums.com is where I've picked up tips on polishing the aluminum skin on my Airstream trailer.

In the 1950's I had a polished Formula 3 Cooper. Spent a lot of time tring to keep it nice. Sold it. A couple years later I saw it and someone had done it with flat grey paint.

Today I have another aluminum bodied car, see my avatar.

I polish it with 3M All Purpose (medium abrasive) Sanding Sponges. (Think DeLorean)

I've learned that perfection doesn't work for me.

Nuvite products...I've tried a bunch of others and found the Nuvite system to be the best. A lot of aircraft polishers recommend it and it works well on my 60 Avion
