Hey all! So I'm finally starting on my '28/'29 Ford sedan that I got earlier this year (or was it last year?) now that I've got life under control (I'm growin up, Pop!)

I know there have been other threads on registering hot rods, but the most recent one with any good info was over a year old and had some questions regarding new legislation left unanswered.

So what do I need to register my Model A on a tube ch***is? The engine I'm wanting to use is a '64 327. Obviously there are no numbers...
I've heard something different from everybody I've asked (including people at DMV) so Id like some kind of definitive answer. Do I need to use a Model A engine number? Get a VIN ***igned to the car? Be part of this "500 per year" kit car hoobla? Go to DMV and dance a jig while reciting Hamlet and balancing a game of jenga on my head?

Any help regarding this is greatly appreciated!!! Id like to get paperwork squared away as soon as possible...

Well, in 2 months it'll be the first of the year. I'd be ready to camp out in front of DMV! You might want to scout out the situation first. Go to DMV and find out who is knowledgable on the SPCNS and SB100 laws and find out if they're gonna be working on Jan 2. Be there as soon as they open Jan 2 and you've got a really good chance of snagging an SB100 #. I know it worked for me! Here's the thread............

Does your vehicle need to be in running condition to get a number from the DMV?

Thanks for the info!! Nobody's ever spelt it out like that. I go get the forms now and fill them out ahead of time?

Does anybody need to see the car NOW, or do i only need the car looked at when its complete?

Also, ***uming the form asks for details regarding engine choice, etc., what happens if I end up using a different motor in the final product? Would I need to reapply for SB100 number, or would it just be a simple change info?

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help!

I would get the car inspected by your local Highway Patrol and have a vin number issued. It would make it a whole lot easier to sell in the future.

Thats the way I'm gonna do it. Build it safe and and compliant. It will be worth more in the long run.

Yeah, you can fill out the forms beforehand. No one needs to see the car now. You'll get it inspected after it's running. If you swap motors during the build, it's not an issue. On final inspection the car will already be in DMV's system as a '29 Ford- Specially Constructed Vehicle. No smog required be it a banger or a hemi. Get there early!

When receiving the SB100 # you're issued a temporary VIN. The SPCNS process is once the car is street worthy it'll have to be inspected by the CHP for certification. At that time you'll be issued a permanent VIN.

I'll be doing this on Jan. 2nd as well, you guys think it would be a good idea to head up to Sacramento (I'm in Mountain View, two hours south) rather than going to the local? I don't think my local ever gets very crowded, but I am worried about relying on a local agent fighting through busy signals to get my SB100 number...

Not sure. I think even the Sacto office needs to contact someone via telephone. If your local DMV isn't usually busy, I would go there a couple of days before, talk to the clerks and let them know what you're gonna do and what they need to do. Form a relationship with one and go see him/her on Jan 2nd. If all works out, it might not be a bad idea to write a thank you letter to their supervisor. That might make it easier for the next guy trying to acquire an SB100 #.

  12. Not be a paranoid.....but I am. I would wait for a frame and ***le to come your way and register it as a '28/'29. This way IF California ever goes back on their word (that never happens here ) and make you smog it or something crazy like that, it's still a regular registered car. On the bonus side, you won't have to just through so many hoops at the DMV.

    Just my .02
